It is especially heartbreaking to see senior dogs spending their golden years confined behind the bars of a kennel. Even more distressing is the sight of helpless puppies whose first experiences of life are defined by those same cold, metal bars. A heartwrenching video of a tiny puppy sitting in confusion behind the bars of a large kennel has reminded us all of the harsh reality faced by our smallest furry friends, leaving many hearts heavy with sorrow.

When Chowder, a cream and tan German Shepherd, arrived at the Riverside County Department of Animal Services in California, he was just seven weeks old. Too small and too young to be alone, he was brought in as a stray. As soon as they placed him in a large kennel, shelter staff were moved by the sight of him sitting there in complete confusion. Soon after, the group @savingriversideshelterdogs came to document his situation, posting a video on Instagram that touched thousands of hearts.

“Just a small baby, in a big kennel, surrounded by kennels of big dogs,” the group wrote in the caption. Because Chowder was so young, he was immediately listed as urgent and flagged as “RESCUE ONLY” since he was underaged for adoption. The American Kennel Club recommends waiting until a puppy is at least 8 to 10 weeks before bringing them home, and Chowder was still one week too young.

During his time at the shelter, staff did everything they could to make him comfortable. He was treated for giardia, an intestinal infection caused by ingesting feces-contaminated food, water, or soil, and soon began to feel much better thanks to their care.

The video of Chowder sitting in his kennel drew an outpouring of emotional reactions online. “Oh, that’s sweet little puppy. How did this cute little puppy end up in a shelter?” one user wrote. Another added, “At least give him a blanket and a toy :(.” A third commented, “Awwww sweet lil baby, you must be so scared and lonely. I pray you get your miracle, and you’re rescued with a safe and loving home.”

Thankfully, there was good news. The rescue organization later shared an update: “Chowder has been taken on a FOSTER FIRST DATE. We hope the foster adopts!” For everyone who watched his story unfold, this was the Christmas miracle they had hoped for. With luck, Chowder will spend his first Christmas not behind cold metal bars, but in the warmth of a forever home, surrounded by love and comfort.

Gumby quickly became known around the Charleston area for his Houdini-like escaping skills after arriving to the no-kill shelter in 2014.

The shelter did everything they could to try to find Gumby a forever home, but he kept ending up back at the shelter. He showed back up at their doorstep 11 times throughout the year. They didn’t know what to do.

His first adoption only lasted three days. The next one, just six. The staff started to warn every family about the dog’s tremendous ability to escape, and the third adopter was determined to make it work.

But the Hound was returned to CAS four more times. On one occasion, a Good Samaritan found Gumby and brought him in. Another time, it was animal control. He was brought back by his adopter two more times.

In March, Gumby was adopted by his fourth family. The shelter hadn’t heard anything about him for four months, and they thought this was it — he’d finally found his forever home. Then in July, Gumby was returned as a stray once again.

Gumby was adopted for a fifth time in August, this time ending up at a sister shelter of CAS nearly 30 miles away.

Back to CAS he went only to be returned by his sixth adopter shortly after.

In December, they gave it one more try. Gumby was adopted, but like always, it didn’t last long. The adopter said the dog escaped three times in a month, one of those times busting through the screen door!

The Charleston Animal Society finally gave up on trying to find Gumby a forever home. What they hadn’t realized is that he had a home this entire time — at the shelter. Gumby loved the attention given to him by the staff and was comfortable right where he was. He was happy and wanted to stay.

Gumby has always had an uncanny way of comforting the anxious and fearful dogs at the shelter, and they felt like part of him wanting to stay was the fact that he had work left to do.

Gumby officially became part of the shelter and was even given the title of General Manager. He’d help the team with behavioral demonstrations in addition to playing with the other dogs and spreading his love.

The staff may have put an end to trying to find Gumby an adopter, but they never gave up on him.

It’s not a traditional home, but the shelter is the place Gumby has always wanted to be. He’s found his purpose in life.

Additionally, the staff recently discovered that the serum from Gumby’s blood has healing properties. He’s now a blood donor for kittens with eye infections! Just another reason Gumby fits in perfectly at the Charleston Animal Society. We couldn’t be happier for him!

Determined to free the frightened dog, the rescuers approached cautiously. But the scared girl, later named Snapple, was defensive and hesitant to trust them. Her initial reaction was one of fear, and she lashed out, but the team was patient.

Donna Lochmann, SRSL’s Chief Life-Saving Officer, opened a can of Vienna sausages, offering Snapple small bites to coax her into trusting them. Bit by bit, the pup let her guard down, eventually allowing the team to secure a leash around her neck. After carefully cutting her free from the tangled cable, they were finally able to lead her to safety.

Once she realized she was truly free, Snapple’s demeanor shifted. Though still cautious, she followed her rescuers to their vehicle and was taken straight to the SRSL shelter. There, she received a thorough bath to wash away the grime from her ordeal, followed by a full medical examination. Thankfully, Snapple was given a clean bill of health, but the emotional scars from her abandonment would take longer to heal.

“She’s been through a lot and doesn’t trust us yet,” SRSL wrote on Facebook. “Our amazing team is working with her to show her that she will never be hurt, discarded, tossed aside or abandoned again.”

Since her rescue, Snapple has begun to blossom at the shelter. Although she’s still wary, her personality is slowly shining through as she learns that she’s finally safe. Snapple is now available for adoption, but SRSL is committed to giving her all the time she needs to recover fully.

“She can let those walls down when she’s ready,” SRSL wrote. “[SRSL] gives dogs the time they need, each on their own unique timeline.” We have no doubt that Snapple will soon be in a loving home where she will be cherished for the good girl she is! It was immediately clear that they were cold and shivering, a sign they had likely been out in the elements for far too long. Hunger etched their faces, revealing they hadn’t eaten for some time. The cardboard box they huddled in offered little protection from the chill of the night. Their only source of warmth had been each other. As Reese approached, she noticed that the dogs weren’t fearful; instead, they seemed to be waiting for the help they so desperately needed.

Reese gently lifted the family out of the box and helped them to their feet. They appeared weak and tired but showed no significant health issues, which was an encouraging sign.

She placed the small family in her kennel and brought them home to rest in a peaceful and secure space. There, the dogs were given cozy bedding and fed regularly. Reese’s heart warmed as she observed the mother dog’s instinctive care—she would always let her puppies eat first. Her selflessness was a beautiful and touching sight.

The family’s time with Reese was filled with comfort and nourishment, laying the foundation for a hopeful future. Reese is confident that, with the right care and attention, each member of the dog family will eventually find a loving home. And so are we! Neighbors said the dog became homeless after her owner passed away. Can you imagine how this pup must have felt? She went from a home with a beloved parent to wandering the streets with her toy as her only compansion. As word of her situation spread, several local organizations — including It Is Pawzable Dog Training, South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery, Sugar Mutts Dog Grooming, and Almost Home Animal Rescue — joined forces to help capture the dog and bring her to safety.

“It’s amazing how everyone comes together and works as a team,” said Katrina Weaver, owner of It Is Pawzable, in an interview with FOX 2.

Thanks to their combined efforts, the rescue mission was a success. Almost Home No Kill Rescue announced that the dog had been safely captured and was now under their care. The rescue also renamed her “Nikki” to better reflect her gender. “Only good things from here on, and onto a better life!” the rescue shared on Facebook. “Thanks for all your support. Nikki will now get to be in a loving home!”

However, there is a challenge: Nikki has been diagnosed with heartworm, which will require four weeks of treatment. For now, she is resting, receiving medication, and enjoying short walks on a leash. Once she has fully recovered, the rescue will begin searching for her forever home.

In the meantime, Nikki is being well cared for — and she still has her cherished stuffed toy by her side. We have no doubt this sweet girl will find a new family soon. Thank you to all the rescuers for giving Nikki a second chance!

The Dirty Dogs Contest is celebrating 12 years and the transformations are breathtaking. Many dogs arrive matted, underweight, and covered in dirt. It is amazing what a warm bath, grooming session, and love can do.

According to Wahl Pets, “Three out of four animals entering shelters today are in need of grooming.”

Shelters and rescues submitted before and after photos of their rescue dogs and we had the difficult task of narrowing it down to 10, but we did it.

The 10 finalists are all in the running for the grand prize of $10,000 (second place receives $3,000 and third place earns $2,000) for their shelter or rescue. The winner will be decided by your votes, so check out the finalists below and don’t forget to vote.

With her incredible makeover complete, Jamie is now ready for adoption and can’t wait to settle in with a loving family.

Fluffy was abandoned in an apartment in Allentown, PA, and discovered in deplorable condition. She was filthy and matted when the police brought her into the shelter. A full groom revealed her to be a beautiful one-eyed girl with a permanently outstretched tongue. Several weeks after arriving at the shelter, Fluffy was adopted by a loving family.

Luke – Second Chance Animal Sanctuaries

Luke was found wandering aimlessly without a home or identity in Tioga, PA. He was so dirty and matted, his face wasn’t visible. In fact, when he was finally bathed and groomed for the first time, he needed anesthesia to remove the mats on his legs and belly. This scruffy pup was transformed into the handsome gentleman he was meant to be. Thankfully, Luke now knows exactly where he belongs – with his loving forever family.

Homer Simpson- Nashville Humane Association

Homer was found under a house during construction in Nashville, TN, along with another adult dog and two puppies, all suffering from mange. Thanks to the care they got at the shelter, the ‘Simpson’ family is now healthy and furry. Although Homer is mature in age, he’s youthful in spirit, cherishes affection and wears a perpetual goofy smile. Homer, now Goose, is happy to report that he has found a family, and new canine sibling, to guide him through life’s adventures!

Scar-Valley Animal Center

Scar was spotted in a social media post about a severely scabies-infested dog by a Fresno, CA, area shelter staff member. Initially unrecognizable due to his condition, it was determined Scar was a small Pomeranian mix. Rescuers suspect he contracted a disease from previous living conditions, but after receiving medication and baths his rash healed. As his skin health improved, so did his demeanor — today Scar is a completely new dog.

Foxy-Marshfield Area Pet Shelter

Foxy was discovered living under a trailer park mobile home in Marshfield, WI. Humane officers contacted Foxy’s owners and persuaded them to surrender the pup to the shelter. As soon as she arrived, she was promptly pampered with a luxurious grooming and bath. A happy pup was revealed under all that matted and dirty fur, and it didn’t take long for her to find a forever home with a lovely couple and her new canine brother.

Mirage-Ingham County Animal Control & Shelter

Cookie arrived at the shelter in Wichita, KS, as a stray with severe mats on his ears, legs and chest. With the help of an expert dog groomer, they removed around two pounds of fur, revealing his true beauty. He’s now thriving in his new home and living his best life.

Madeline-NYC Second Chance Rescue

Madeline was found as a stray in deplorable condition. She suffered from an extreme case of mange, with skin that appeared as though it had been singed off. Blood and pus oozed from her wounds, causing her significant pain. Rescuers from her shelter in Whitestone, NY, healed her wounds and provided her with love and care she had never known. Madeline now has her forever family, is living happily in the city and now goes by Milly.

Mattie-Mountain Humane

Mattie was found abandoned in a hotel parking lot in Hailey, ID. Her owner, a homeless woman, asked police to surrender her to the shelter in the hopes she would get better care. After being assessed by a medical team, it was discovered Mattie had more than 40 pounds of mats, and other health issues. But after a week of care, Mattie found her forever home and became a beloved companion, enjoying car rides, vacations and cuddles.

The sweet pup stole everyone’s heart and by Monday already had a loving home. She was adopted by John Travolta’s 11-year-old son, Ben.

John Travolta posted the happy news on Instagram and wrote, “Ben adopted this dog from last nights Oscar tribute to Betty White. Thank you @curtisleejamie & @pawworks.”

Thousands thanked the young boy for adopting and Michelle Pfeiffer wrote, “Aw..lucky boy. Lucky dog. ”

Jamie Lee Curtis was thrilled by the news and posted a photo of the Pulp Fiction actor holding the puppy backstage.

She congratulated the family on their new addition and called it, “A MAGICAL ending to the story from last night.” She went on to praise the rescue, Paw Works, and all the other animal rescues out there.

“It is an emotional end and a perfect tribute to Betty White and it shines a light and AMPLIFIES the message that heroes who, like Betty, and Chad from @pawworks and Nancy from @perfect_pet_rescue and the team at @maedayrescue and the hundreds of thousands of other rescues, who love and support ANIMALS, that rescuing animals and offering them shelter from the storm of life and a warm and loving home is one of life’s most important actions we humans can take!”

The rescue summed up the night perfectly. wrote, “On a night of winners and losers, we think Mac N Cheese is the biggest winner of all! We know @bettymwhite was shining down last night. Happy life little lady ”.

The rescuers drove several miles and came to the dirt road. Off in the distance, they could see a tiny puppy sitting beside a worn down pillar.

He looked very young! But as the rescuers got closer, he got spooked and ran into the brush.

Determined to save him, the rescuers got closer and calmly called to him. That is when they got the shock of their lives!

Who could be so cruel? These little ones couldn’t fend for themselves! And what about the elements? It was heartbreaking!

Their tiny cries said so much: “We need help, thank goodness you came when you did!”

The rescuers were prepared with food and water. They placed it down and the puppies came running! They were starving and so very thirsty!

While they ate, Milan, one of the rescuers, still prayed Mama would come out and join them. But no, there really was no mom in sight. So sad! But at least the pups finally had food. They were ravenous!

After they had some food, Milan gathered them up to bring them to safety. Look, it’s a rescue puppy bouquet!

They were loaded into the van and then Milan searched again for their mother. They still had hope.

Unfortunately, it was definitive, she had not been abandoned with them. Meet the puppies!

The puppies were taken back to their shelter where they are getting tons of love and proper care.

They will get all the vet meds and vaccinations they need, then go up for adoption. Aren’t they precious?

Thanks to kind-hearted people, like Milan and his crew, the pups are safe and sound. We know it doesn’t erase the bad in the world, like abandoning unwanted animals, but we are so thankful there are people willing to do what they can to save precious lives.

The sweet Pit Bull cannot bend his back legs. He sits, lays and walks in a unique way to compensate for his issues. Thankfully, his future mom, Michele, saw him at the kill shelter and it was love at first sight! She explains in the video below, that despite all he had been through and his obvious discomfort, he wagged his tail as soon as they laid eyes on each other!

Within a year of adopting Aladdin, he became a certified therapy dog. This was because Aladdin could connect with people in a special way. He especially loves kids. The room can be jammed with people but somehow Aladdin will make his way over to the person who needs his attention most. No one can explain it for sure, but it just seems he can sense their emotional pain. Maybe it’s because of his past. Maybe it’s because he is still in pain himself from his deformed legs.

Aladdin was at the scene after the Orlando nightclub shootings. He made his way through the crowd and went straight over to a man. The crowd was huge and no one knew for sure who was inside the club or standing nearby for support. But Aladdin did! He made a beeline for one man that said: “This dog looked at me and knew I needed him.” It turned out that he was inside the club and Aladdin knew that this kind man needed to feel safe. It was such a touching moment.

This amazing pup doesn’t just help people, he also comforts dogs that have suffered from animal abuse and trauma. But despite all Aladdin does for dogs and people, he still has to deal with the breed stereotype. His mom knows firsthand how tough it can be. Kids will flock over to pet Aladdin but as soon as some of the parents ask what type of dog he is and hear he’s a Pit Bull, they’ll pull their kids away from him. Aladdin’s mom Michele is doing all she can to change that! Even if she has to dress him up to make him more approachable, she has a fun time doing it!

Aladdin is also an award winner. He won ‘Therapy Dog of The Year’ by the American Humane Association. This was a turning point for Aladdin. A gentleman who was in the audience at the award dinner came up to Michele and said he will perform surgery on Aladdin for free. The vet knew he could relieve most of his orthopedic pain. How incredible is that?!

Aladdin’s story continues and we promise it only gets better. We are blown away by this dog and his incredible connection to people and other pups who need him most.
