Meet Bernie: Frightened Lab mix curled up in ball at Virginia shelter

Meet Bernie; he is only seven months old, and this frightened Labrador retriever mix is so frightened, he curls himself up in a ball, covers his face or hides in the corner. The staff and volunteers at the Franklin County Humane Society Planned Pethood & Adoption Center don’t know what happened to this puppy, but his plight is truly heartbreaking, and they are reaching out to the community for help.

“This is how Bernie spends his days because he is so scared. He balls up tight and either covers his face or hides it in the corner. Just going in to spend time with him, you look down at him and he puts his paw over his face, because he is so uncomfortable and scared and he just wants to hide. It absolutely breaks your heart and you feel helpless,” the shelter posted on their Facebook page.

Bernie needs a person to love him and patiently renew his faith and confidence in humans. He has been making progress, but it’s very slow. So far, he does best with calm dogs.

In order for Bernie to come out of his shell, he needs to get out of the shelter and into a loving home. Can you be his person? Can you be patient, loving and understanding? If so, Bernie is waiting for you.
