Neglected 7-week-old Lab puppy rescued from Texas shelter at last minute

At a shelter in Cleveland, Texas, a seven-week-old Labrador retriever puppy had been on the list to be euthanized on Thursday when ThisIsHouston stepped forward to rescue him.

“We just received a plea to help this little puppy at Cleveland shelter. The shelter does not have any vets on staff, so they typically euthanize medical cases and injured dogs if a rescue can’t pick them up same day.

This itty bitty baby could’ve been killed today if we hadn’t stepped up.”

The puppy, now dubbed Casper, was rushed to Vergi 24/7 for life saving treatment as the puppy groaned in pain. His little belly was swollen from worms, his gums very pale as he fought through a severe case of mange and infection.

“He’s having the best sleep of his life right now in this this A/C while we wait to VERGI to run a parvo test for precaution,” the organization posted on their social media page.

On Thursday evening, little Casper received a blood transfusion and will remain on intravenous fluids and antibiotics. He is also scheduled to be placed under sedation while he undergoes medicated baths.

Casper update. This is a video from yesterday but it’s so peaceful, we had to share it! ❤️ Casper is still at Vergi 24/7. He’s had a second blood transfusion overnight since the first one didn’t affect his PCV levels. Goals for today are to monitor his red blood cells and hopefully get him an interest in food. He was eating yesterday upon arrival to VERGI but doesn’t have an interest in food currently. He was tested for parvo yesterday as a precaution and was negative, so his lack of interest is likely due to everything going on. He may very well need a third blood transfusion but VERGI will monitor. They want to keep him throughout the day for sure and maybe until tomorrow morning. He’s also scheduled for another medicated bath under sedation later this afternoon. Overnight, Casper received an additional blood transfusion. His red blood cells will continue to be monitored, and it is hoped he will soon want to eat. He has tested negative for Parvovirus. He is expected to remain at the hospital.

We will be checking on him and update information as it is made available.
