True heroism comes in many different forms, and sometimes it walks on four loving paws. For former Marine Corporal Jeff DeYoung, his ultimate brother-in-arms was a beautiful black Labrador Retriever named Cena. This extraordinary dog was far more than a simple family pet. He was a highly trained, dedicated Marine hero who saved countless human lives in some of the most dangerous battlefields on earth. From 2009 to 2014, Cena proudly served as a vital bomb-detection dog with the United States Marine Corps. He completed three intense tours of duty in Afghanistan right alongside his devoted handler, Jeff. Together, they faced unimaginable terrors, relying completely on each other to survive the horrors of war.

Cena possessed an incredible, sharp nose that could easily detect hundreds of complex types of hidden explosives. Every single day, he walked ahead of the troops to clear dangerous paths and locate deadly improvised explosive devices. His exceptional bravery protected hundreds of soldiers and kept them safe from harm. Sadly, a severe hip injury eventually put an end to his impressive military career. He was officially retired from active duty, leaving the battlefield behind forever. Fortunately, the beautiful story did not end there. Through the wonderful efforts of American Humane, Cena was officially reunited with Jeff back home. He transitioned into a brand new role as Jeff’s dedicated service dog.

Jeff struggled deeply with severe post-traumatic stress disorder and the heartbreaking loss of his fellow Marines. During these dark and heavy times, Cena absolutely refused to leave his side.
