Barry Stewart is the amazing teacher inspiring kids to do more for other. He wanted to motivate his students to learn skills they will use as adults, helping them better prepare for the future, and in 2002 he started a program where his shop students learned basic construction skills while building dog houses. The houses are donated to the Houses for Hounds program run by the Forsyth County Animal Control.

Since the beginning of this program, the students have mastered construction skills and donated more than 600 dog house to low-income pet owners and animal welfare groups.

The teenagers have not only learned a wonderful skill, but this opportunity have also led them to design better homes for dogs in need. The houses now feature removable roofs, doorways positioned on the side of the homes to protect pets against wind, and a two-inch raised entryway to prevent pets from removing their beds.

This shows how the right guidance helps our future leaders to think of others first. Doing good things doesn’t take much, and the world would be a better place if compassion is taught at a young age.

The shop students now plan to add feeding stations to their goals and help even more animals in need. Think of all the homeless animals these feeding stations will help.

Senior Airman Rob McKnight doesn’t know how to thank the community of strangers that came together to find and rescue his beloved pet Lola. McKnight adopted the dog while he was stationed in Japan with his family, and this June the family moved back to Wisconsin.

Lola and Lexi made the trip to their new home on June 9, 2015, they were staying with McKnight’s parents in Colgate, Wis., but two days after arriving Lola went missing.

The Air Force mechanic couldn’t imagine coming to his new home and not have his pet there to greet him, and when animal lovers from Colgate heard the pet was lost they came together to help the McKnights and local authorities find Lola. On June 16, 2015, just five nights after disappearing, Lola was found.

“It was a hot dog and a loop leash. That’s all it took,” McKnight told Fox 6 Now.

Volunteers covered hundreds of miles searching for the lost dog and when spotted, the pet was lured with a tasty hot dog.

“You know, you don’t come across animal lovers like that very often — that are just willing to drop everything and go out and help a single family and we are very blessed to have that,” said McKnight’s wife, Alissa.

Lola lost a few pounds and had injured her paws while on the run, but with some TLC and lots of food she is expected to make a full recovery.

Police and firefighters arrived to the garbage bin located on the 20th block of Ferrocarril Street. They tried to reach the scared and trapped dog but couldn’t. Rescuers needed a key to unlock the bin’s locked doors. The city’s waste management office was contacted and soon a representative arrived with a key to open the bin.

Once the container was opened, rescuers learned the dog was placed inside a double and tightly knotted bag. Whoever tossed the dog wanted to make sure the pet had no way out and no chance of survival. Fortunately, the dog was saved.

Firefighters scanned the pet for a microchip and none was found. The dog, now named Abu, was transported to a local veterinarian where it was determined he is 15 years old, deaf, almost blind and suffers from an enlarged heart.

Community members rallied together to collect funds to pay for Abu’s medical needs. The senior dog is currently under the care of a rescue group (Defaniva) and is enjoying proper care and love in a foster home.

Animal rescuers hope to find Abu a forever home where he could enjoy the last of his days, which could just be a few months.
