He weighed only 19 pounds, little more than a third of what would be considered healthy.  A good Samaritan saved him from the streets, where he would have quickly perished, and brought him to Bossier City Animal Control.

“This poor guy who we’ve named Jude was left on a chain to starve. When he got close to death they cut him loose so they didn’t have to deal with disposing of the carcass,” they said on their Facebook page.  “Despite humans failing him in every way possible, he still wags his tail and gives kisses.”

Jude was taken to Benton Animal Hospital for treatment and recovery.  BCAC’s office manager and rescue coordinator Brittany Hardy said she sees many pit bulls come in in a similar state.

“They’re a great breed, but often used for income and no care for where they end up, and a lot of the time they end up here,” she told the Shreveport Times.

It has taken months of care, but Jude is finally beginning to look like a healthy and happy boy.  He still has a few more pounds to pack on, but one of the staff members recently told me that now he is “doing great.”

Five years ago, Zachary Anderegg was hiking in an isolated area in Arizona when he saw a bony black puppy huddled at the bottom of a 350-foot canyon.  There was no way this puppy got down there by himself, and he certainly wasn’t going to get out by himself.

A better person couldn’t have come along.  Zak is a former US Marine Sergeant, and was up for the challenge.  Some parts of the hike weren’t so bad, but other stretches were jammed with logs.  He set up his rappelling equipment and made his way down into the narrow crevice to reach the pup.

On his second trip down, Zak brought food and water.  He didn’t have everything he needed to pull the dog up to safety, but at least provided him with food and a towel for the night.  The next day, Zak returned with a crate.  It was incredibly difficult, but he managed to lug the starving puppy up to the top of the canyon.

The poor dog was in terrible shape; he was emaciated, his paws were completely torn up, his teeth were blackened from malnutrition, and he had shotgun pellets embedded in his skin.  Zak sought medical attention for the dog, and called him Riley.

Zak and his wife adopted Riley, and before long, his health improved and he bloomed into the charismatic, life-loving dog he was meant to be.  He even got a big dog brother named Kohi, whom he gets along with very well.

Riley started out life being horribly abused and unloved.  Now he is beloved by thousands and goes on all kinds of adventures.  He is living life to its fullest by romping through the snow, leaping over boulders, and splashing through desert pools.  Most importantly, he’s doing all this with his family.

“She was completely skin and bones,” Beach told Fox CT. “She walked very slowly, like everything hurt.”

Beach approached the dog and after realizing how skinny and abused the pet was, she called police. Officers were dispatched to Bernardino Avenue to pick up the dog and transport her to an animal clinic.

Veterinarians examined the pet, found no microchip on her and said she was approximately one or two years old. A healthy dog at that age should weigh between 40-60 lbs, but the abused pet only weighed 15 lbs.

Enfield Animal Control is keeping the dog and nursing her back to health. Once she is healthy she will be made available for adoption, meanwhile there is an ongoing police investigation and rescuers hope the criminals who abused the young dog are apprehended.

“We’ve never had a dog in this bad of shape come into the pound before,” said Animal Control Officer Eric Boucher. “[This is] plain neglect, abuse animal cruelty.”
