But they needn’t have worried. On seeing this “unusual-looking” puppy, the Doblar family instantly fell in love.

Meet Lucky, the cutie formerly known as Lisa.

Her inflamed eyes and other facial scars might have made it difficult for her to find a home, but personality-wise, she was just like any other puppy.

HSSV’s Finnegan Dowling said that despite her physical challenges, Lucky was a “pretty typical wiggly, squirmy, happy puppy” and that she was very social. “She loves other dogs and toys, is ridiculously kissy and she’ll lick your nose clean off…She wasn’t hesitant or frightened or timid at all.”

One day, the Doblar family came to the shelter looking for a new dog. They’d recently lost their old pooch, and wanted a special replacement. They immediately fell in love with Lucky.

“She’s pretty funky looking [but] she just has a wonderful, sparkling personality,” Christine Doblar told The Dodo. “The fact that she was going to each of us, and [was] just as loving and exuberant with everyone she greeted…we looked at a few more dogs but nobody could compare to that.”

The Doblars decided to adopt her that very day. They renamed her Lucky — they felt that both she and they were blessed to find one another.

Since then, she’s settled in pretty well.

Lucky is also getting to know her six-year-old lab brother, Pele, who had been “kind of depressed,” according to Doblar, over the death of the family’s other dog. Now, the two are becoming friends.

It’s important to remember that even if they look funny, all creatures need love and affection. There’s also something that we can take from Lucky, says Dowling. “It doesn’t occur to her that she is different from other puppies. She doesn’t compare herself to others. Whatever caused her injuries, she holds no malice towards anyone for it.”

Once the team arrived, a brave rescuer named Ganpat was lowered into the pit, where he quickly made friends with the sweet dog and carried him to the surface. As the duo arrived on the outside, rescuers inspected the uninjured pup and let him go on his merry way.

Hats off to these guys, especially Ganpat. They all deserve so much respect for the incredible work they do.

She has what’s called short spine syndrome, or baboon dog syndrome.

When LeRoy found Cuda, her shortened spine was squishing all of her organs. She required immediate medical attention.
But now Cuda is an integral and loving part of the LeRoy family.

…Which includes four other dogs and LeRoy’s husband, who’s happy with his reluctant decision to welcome the special needs pup into his home.
Cuda got nothing but love at home…

But with her first public outing came points and mean-spirited giggles from other pet store goers. The sneering and snickering sent the dog’s mom out of the store with heartbreak.
In an effort to channel the comments to something positive, LeRoy entered Cuda in the World’s Ugliest Dog competition in 2011…

Although she didn’t win, public opinion of her quickly turned around.
Soon, whenever she went out for a walk, everyone wanted to meet her!

With all this attention, LeRoy decided it was time to make a Facebook page for Cuda, in order to raise awareness about special needs dogs.

She wanted there to be a place online where parents and prospective parents of special needs dogs could go to become informed. LeRoy hoped to form a community to help raise awareness to the general public.
Cuda has also been diagnosed with diabetes, which is a full-time job to keep in check.

The LeRoy household has totally changed their way of life to attend to Cuda’s insulin needs…but it’s worth it.
As if finding her true forever home wasn’t enough to make this pup content, she’s now helping others!

Cuda is a certified therapy dog, bringing joy to those who need it most.

To think that someone didn’t want to give this cutie a chance at happiness breaks my heart, but she’s spreading a message of love and awareness that will hopefully, one day, prevent stories like hers from occurring again.

When a man in Portugal heard faint cries coming from deep underground, he set to work finding the source of the wails. After slowly and carefully chipping away at an old pipe, he first found a dog that sadly didn’t survive the elements…but what he found as he kept digging had me holding my breath until the very end.

It’s amazing that this pup didn’t just give up after being stuck underground in the dark like that for who knows how long. While it’s still unclear just how these dogs got themselves into this extremely unfortunate situation, the tail-wagging at the end of the story had me cheering!

Echo was born deaf. When the breeder realized this, they gave her away to a family that was unaware of her disability. This first owner, who first threatened to put the pup down, abandoned her at a shelter. She was all skin and bones, but she still had a light in her.
Marion Dwyer first saw the pup in a group chat.

She was weak and far too skinny. Dwyer knew she had to take her in.
In her last “home,” Echo had resorted to eating rocks.

Now, Echo is the sweetest, happiest pup with so much love to give…

Which makes you wonder how her original owner could have possibly deemed the pup “useless.”

It was a bit difficult to train the deaf Great Dane at first…

But she caught on, like the smart pup she is, and is very well behaved.

In an open letter to the woman who didn’t see Echo as a complete pup, Dwyer writes:

“She is only alive because of the Louisiana Great Dane Rescue that always keeps an eye out for dogs that are discarded like her. And we are happy that they chose us to adopt Echo.”
“We figured even though she is deaf she deserves a name, just like any other pet or person… “

She goes on: “[It took a while to get her to trust] that there will ALWAYS be another meal and that she doesn’t have to eat rocks and other things she found outside…”

“And that she doesn’t have to try and drink as much water until she got sick, because there would always be more water later.”

After living with her loving family, Echo has so much cheer to bring…

She’s training to be a therapy dog, so that she can bring joy to those who need it most.

If this isn’t enough to convince someone to give a disabled dog a second chance, they don’t deserve to have the joy that animal would bring to their lives anyway. Hopefully, stories like Echo’s will bring light to terrible breeding practices, as well as the importance of really knowing what you’re signing on for when you bring a puppy home. Every animal deserves a loving home the first time around, and shouldn’t have to suffer through such ignorance.

Coconut only got to know love after she was rescued by the ASPCA from a traumatizing life at a puppy mill. The poor dog was kept in a cage for the bulk of her life. When rescuers arrived at the scene, she seemed quite agitated and nervy around them, often biting them when they got too close.

Yet things were about to change for the better for Coconut. The love that her new human friends showed her got her to start trusting people. As you can see in this beautiful video below, she actually started to love being around people.

What a remarkable recovery, and to think it took only 6 weeks! Coconut is clearly a strong dog, and it’s wonderful to see this program in place now. Too many dogs are labelled “aggressive” when just time and patience can turn these dogs around. All they need is time to gain confidence, and a whole lot of love from us.

Before entering his loving forever home, Sweeny had three previous sets of parents that didn’t want him.

His new parents drove five hours through the snow to pick up their new baby.

Though he wasn’t very well groomed, his mom showered him with love anyway.

Needless to say, the sentiment was enthusiastically reciprocated.

Five hours in the car is a long time for a pup, so his mom took Sweeny on a quick walk through the new neighborhood once they arrived.

Then it was time for a much overdue bath.

He did NOT enjoy this part of his homecoming as much as the walk, but his mom sure was thankful for a fresh coat…

Especially since the pup had every intention of taking partial custody of the bed.

Since coming to his new, happy home, he’s been renamed Marshall.

It’s incredibly fitting for this bundle of love to shed his sad past, along with his old name.

This is the happy ending that every dog deserves. Marshall is such a lucky pup, especially since his mom and dad love him so much (they’ve even given him free range to destroy anything he can get his little paws on)! Wear your new name proud, big guy!
