Meet Capt. Jack. As a puppy – beyond adorable. I knew he was our next dog. As most rescue stories start, it wasn’t a happy one. He was dumped on a cold country road at night in Dec., six-eight weeks old. The country vet, whose wife happened to be hubby’s high school classmate, took him in. She posted pictures, hoping to find his forever home. Hubby saw the pics and I cajoled that we could foster. He agreed to foster, but I knew we were his forever home and the “fostering” was a ruse. We went to meet Capt. With our other rescue pup, Chloe, whose start was just as rough.

Chloe and Capt. were BFFs instantly. Loading Capt. in the car, my husband realized this was forever, not foster. The vet’s wife, thrilled he was ours, she saw red flags with him and was she right! We had challenges galore. Capt. was very different from our five previous rescues. He was scared of men, the dark, strangers, and the vet. He has fear aggression. He’s curious about everything and afraid of it all. He lunges at people and tries to nip. He bullies around the house and terrorizes our two cats. Mortal enemies are critters, he chases and on occasion catches.

He’s expensive with double knee surgeries. He ripped his toenails so badly, needed a vet visit to stop the bleeding, snip and wrap foot. He’s on Prozac. He’s doped for vet appointments. He has incredibly stinky gas. He can’t handle temperature extremes. He lays on air conditioning and in front of furnace wall vents. He survived the great “Christmas Tree Massacre of 2012.” He pulled glass bulbs off the tree and chewed them, and littered the room with glass shards.

He hates delivery people. His battle with the neighbor’s cat ended in defeat and left Capt. a bloody mess. He’s cute but not cuddly, a terrible combo. People always want to pet him. He’s not the brightest bulb on the tree, but he sure is the cutest. Cute can get you far.

On top of all that and his many other quirks, we love him fiercely. Our vet has said time and again, Capt. Jack is lucky to have us. Most other people would have given up and likely euthanized him. Capt. Jack, long may he reign!

I have a chronic, sometimes debilitating illness, but even as a puppy Joey was content to snuggle next to me in bed and take care of me. He went through so many sad life events with me – divorce, losing my house, moving four times – but he was always there for me.

He loved his daddy, even after the divorce, and adored our daughter, and recently my granddaughter. We were all his. He loved to rub his forehead on us, as if to say “you are mine,” and when my daughter was young we started to show our affection to him the same way rubbing our face in his fur saying, “mine, mine, mine.” That usually made him playful, too.

He had awful allergies, and was taking five antihistamines and a steroid. The steroids made him gain weight, and as he grew older his hips grew weaker and eventually he was taking pain pills, as well. Even through this, he was always the caregiver. We loved and spoiled him every day.

I had to help him across the rainbow bridge this week, it was the hardest decision I have ever had to make. I could not let my baby boy suffer in pain though, because I know what that is like. We miss him so much – he was a gift from God and we will always love him, forever in our hearts.

This comes from The Animal Rescue Site, which in addition to featuring fan-submitted rescue stories, also sells all sorts of items – from clothes to pet supplies – and a pet food donation is made with every purchase. In the summer of 1975 my husband and I went for a ride in the Ramapo Mountains with our 2-year-old son. Something ran across the road in front of us. We looked at each other and said “what was that?” I started yelling to stop the car but my husband was reluctant because we didn’t know what it was. Needless to say he stopped. I got out and sat on the side of the road. This poor little thing came slinking out of the woods with her tail wagging and crawled into my lap. I was in love. Into the car she went. We brought her home gave her food, a bath and a comfortable bed. The next day we took her to the vet. She was approximately four months old. She had lost most of her hair due to flea infestation, she was under weight, had a broken leg and rickets. She threw up berry skins, twigs and leaves for days....

My twin sister has always struggled with depression and anxiety. She’s had a rough past few years, and after having to be institutionalized for severe self-harm, we knew we had to find some sort of solution. Something that she could put all of her thoughts into that wouldn’t stress her out or hurt her.
Nevertheless, my mom went online to look at pugs and see if there was a rescue available. In her searching, she came across a little pug named Molly, who was said to be a seven-year-old “party pug.” My sister saw her pictures and fell in love–we knew we had to get her. So we drove half an hour to the shelter and when we picked her up, she was immediately drawn to my sister. She was all over her, kissing her and nuzzling her. She sat on her lap on the entire car ride home.

It doesn’t stop there, though. After the first day of having her, we noticed that she was babying her right eye, and she was very thin. The vet said that she had a very bad ulcer on her eye which would require surgery. We took her to another veterinarian (a friend of the family) to get a second opinion, and found out that she also had a protein deficiency and an infection (and also, she was actually nine years old). The vet made her a special serum out of her own blood to help her eye, and gave her medicine, and she got all better without the surgery! Now she really IS our party pug, always running and playing ball, and she loves to snuggle. My sister has never been happier.

We saved Molly, and Molly saved our family. We love our party pug!
