UPDATE: Tennessee man accused of beating dog and setting her on fire

A six-year-old Labrador retriever in Benton County has miraculously survived after a man beat her with a baseball bat, hammered her in the head and set her on fire. Cody Shay Townsend, 29, was arrested on Monday and charged with aggravated animal cruelty, aggravated burglary and trespassing.

Meet Sissy, the amazing dog who is covered in burns and her head stapled together, tried to protect her family and their home from being burglarized. According to WsetNews, Sissy’s owner, Jessica Cordeau tells the disturbing details.

“He hit her in the head with a hammer, that’s where the staples are, and then I heard he started beating her with the baseball bat.”

Townsend hooked the baseball bat through the dog’s collar and dragged her to a fire pit and tried to throw her in. Fortunately, Good Samaritans witnessed what happened and rushed the dog to a veterinary hospital which likely saved her life.

Sissy may need surgery to remove her burned skin, but is expected to make a full recovery. Her veterinarian, Elizabeth Paschall described the dog as trusting during the entire time she was being treated for her injuries.
