Heartbroken Senior Dog Who Looked For His Deceased Owner Every Day Finds New Home

Sammy, a 14-year-old dachshund, went viral when his sad story was shared by Monmouth County SPCA shelter.

The New Jersey animal shelter shared that Sammy became homeless after his elderly owner passed away. The heartbroken dog continued to look for his owner every day at the shelter.

“Sammy is here with us now and all day he sits and stares out the glass waiting for his person to come – every time someone passes by, his little head perks up but then lowers back down when he realizes it’s just a stranger,” wrote the shelter.

The sweet pup had endured so much loss in a short time. Four months ago, his littermate passed away and then his beloved owner. The shelter was determined to find him a loving home to spend the rest of this days.

Thousands of people commented and shared the post and that same day someone came forward to adopt Sammy.

The shelter shared the good news on Facebook. They said, “Sweet Sammy is sleeping comfortably tonight with his new forever family, one that will help him remember what it’s like to be loved.”

While they are thrilled that Sammy found his forever home, they encourage everyone to head to their local shelter to adopt.

“We want to remind everyone about the animals whose posts don’t go viral in a few hours – they also need the same kind of rally we saw for Sammy ❤️ We encourage everyone to visit their local shelters and see which adoptable pets are waiting for homes – your perfect match could be waiting for you right this moment, and you’d never know!”

Senior pets are typically harder to adopt and are often passed by for younger dogs. However, senior dogs make the best companions. They are housebroken, know basic commands and how to walk on a leash, and enjoy life at a slower pace. They have so much love to give and deserve to spend their golden years in a loving home.
