‘Major’ News: Joe Biden’s German Shepherd Major Will Be First Rescue Dog To Live In White House

On Saturday, November 7, 2020, history was made.

Joe Biden was announced as the president-elect and will bring the first rescue dog in history to live at the White House.

George Washington was the first president of the United States and also the first to bring his faithful dogs along. Since then, 30 of the 44 presidents have brought at least one dog to live with them at the White House.

Terriers, hounds, and shepherds have all lived in the West Wing, but not one was a rescue – until now.

The Biden family has two German Shepherds, Champ and Major, who will be joining them at the White House. Major was adopted in 2018 from the Delaware Humane Association.

At the time of adoption, Biden said, “We are so happy to welcome Major to the Biden family, and we are grateful to the Delaware Humane Association for their work in finding forever homes for Major and countless other animals.”

Major was fostered to make sure he would be a good fit with Champ, which the Biden family welcomed in 2008, and it didn’t take long for the pair to become inseparable.

Upon hearing Major Biden made history, Delaware Humane Association posted, “First Dog Elect 🐾”

Dogs have run the halls of the West Wing for decades, but have been absent for the past four years.

President Donald Trump was the first president in 100 years, since William McKinley, to not have a dog by his side.

Biden included his beloved dogs in his campaign and encouraged voters to bring dogs back to the White House. “Folks — you’re not just voting to put me in the White House. You’re also voting for Champ and Major. Let’s put dogs back in the White House,” wrote Biden and fellow dog lovers agreed.

The adorable dogs are often featured on Biden’s social media pages and he thinks both dogs will make great First Dogs.

“No ruff days on the trail when I have some Major motivation,” posted Biden on Instagram.

While Major will be the first rescue dog, hopefully he won’t be the last. Other rescue organizations are celebrating the good news. Hello Bully posted, “It’s official! The White House will be home to a rescue dog for the first time in American history! Major Biden, we look forward to seeing much more of you and Champ!”
