You can see how Buddha wants to come out from behind the trash cans, but he was too scared. Buddha couldn’t resist the yummy cheeseburger they offered him! After an hour, and a lot of baby talk, Buddha was on his way! I loved when Buddha leaned up against the man driving the car after being rescued!

Fortunately, Casey found the dog, now named Rambo, in time! She rushed Rambo to Baxter Veterinary Clinic. Rambo was covered with bite marks and lacerations and was severely injured, and his leg wounds infected with gangrene.

There is no way of knowing the amount of time this poor dog, now known as Rambo, was left lying there alone, after being thrown away. Judging by his injuries, and the fact that there were other long since discarded carcasses, it is pretty clear that he was used as a bait dog in a fighting ring.

Baxter Veterinary Clinic immediately stepped in to care for Rambo, preventing him from going into shock and saving his life.
Despite the trauma, neglect and abuse, Rambo did not give up on humans – he continued to wag his tail and give the staff kisses.

Once his condition was stabilized, Rambo was placed in a shallow tabletop basin where a technician lovingly cleansed his wounds with warm water. You can see from the photo posted to the Baxter Veterinary Clinic’s Facebook page that he was relaxed and soothed by the treatment – likely the first kind, gentle contact he’s ever had with a human.

By the following day, the timid, submissive pup was already wagging his tail for staff members and displaying a healthy appetite. Veterinarian James Doyle described Rambo’s personality as a perfect example of a bait dog. They’re not aggressive dogs and that’s why they’re used as bait dogs, because they’re not any good at fighting.

Every Life Matters Animal Rescue and donations from the community have helped cover the costs for Rambo but they, like other rescue organizations, continue to need funds to continue paying for his recovery, along with all the other dogs who need help.
Investigators believe the site where Rambo was found, was the dog fighting rings personal dump site. Rambo’s serious injuries to both back legs are what led his captors to leave him for dead.

Rambo’s abusers are still currently being searched for by South Carolina Police. But in the meantime, this sweet tempered pooch keeps his tail waggin while snuggling with his plush toy. His recovery will likely be long and painful, but, his prognosis is good. His experiences with the loving and caring humans that have been taking care of him, have seemed to make him feel his nightmare is now over. Every comforting pat or rub given him, he happily repays with kisses.

I’m sure there are many of you out there who have a World’s Greatest Dog, right? Well if there were an award, our rescued three-legged pit bull Bella would definitely receive a nomination — if not take home the gold.

When we started fostering with our local shelter we already had a fairly good idea of how Bella would react to the new house guests. She had already befriended a rescued cow, watched over piglets saved from slaughter, and looked after battery-caged chickens from the largest farmed animal rescue in California’s history. But we never anticipated just how stellar her mothering skills would be.

Pit bulls are often victims of prejudice and discrimination, but contrary to popular conceptions this breed has some of the most gentle and stable temperaments. In 2011, the American Temperament Test Society showed the American pit bull terrier scored an overall temperament rating of 83.9 percent compared to the 77 percent score of the general dog population. I know this, and a quick Google search will easily tell you the same. But I want you to see and experience this.

So far, Bella has helped me care for three litters of kittens, and she has always been gentle and kind. She gladly shares her water bowl, her dog bed, and her human attention. She takes turns grooming them, and they greet her every morning by curling around her legs, and cry when she comes in from her walks.

Bella is doing her part to make sure these kittens are well adjusted and adopted into their forever homes. When they head back to the adoption floor in a few weeks, their enclosures will proudly read, “dog-friendly”.

When I was first looking to adopt a dog, I thought adopting a 2-year-old pup was an older dog. Little did I realize my 2-year-old needed countless walks, at least four or more miles each day, to expend energy. She had a chewing habit she needed to quit, and she had routine “zoomie” runs several times a day around my already small apartment. I kept waiting for that magical age when she would suddenly mellow out.

Even when we were looking to adopt a second dog, we thought we were doomed to a repeat of those crazy years. I wasn’t sure I ever wanted to go through that again.

I don’t know why it never occurred to me before, but what if we just chose a dog who had already reached that magical, mellow age?

The summer we were looking to adopt we couldn’t find any older male dogs in the entire Chicago area. Our search finally led us all the way to Kalamazoo, Mich., where we found 5-year-old Mr. B.

Mr. B was a practically move-in ready dog. He was beyond the chewing phase, didn’t have too much energy to burn and was just as happy hanging out at home as he was going on walks. He fit right in.

Miss M is now 8 years old, and Mr. B is 9 years old. And while some people might consider them “old,” we just enjoy this quality time knowing they fit in perfectly to our current lifestyle.

This isn’t to say just because our dogs are older we can’t do anything. We take our pups everywhere in the city: street festivals, dog-friendly bars, farmers markets, outdoor dining areas, parades and wine stores where they charm everyone they meet.

We still go on those four mile walks … but only when we choose to go. And Mr. B’s favorite hobby? Skateboarding. We share our experiences on our blog, Two Pitties in the City, to educate people about the realities of living with pit bull type dogs who also happen to be elderbulls.

We really value the quality of the time with our pups now, and to us having such a perfect fit is more important than the quantity of time we have. It was so difficult for us to even find an older dog to adopt, we hope that by sharing our experiences more people will give these pooches a second chance. We know when we are looking to adopt again, we will definitely go for the elderbull.

And while we used to lament some of the physical changes we noticed in our pups, we prefer to think of it as more a type of nobility. Much like the book “The Velveteen Rabbit,” maybe the fur on Mr. B’s elbows is becoming worn, his ears are a bit tattered and frayed, and the fur on his nose has rubbed away from being petted so much. But we think that just makes him the velveteen pit bull.

And just like the Skin Horse so wisely explains in the book: “This is what happens when you are loved for a long, long time.”
