UPDATE: Retired Military Dog Reunited with Soldier he Served With

Back in October, Life with Dogs brought you the story of Howard. He is a retired bomb sniffing dog from the U.S. Army, and was part of a custody battle between a sheriff’s deputy named Deon Fuller, and his handler from the army, Alex Reimer. As of now, Fuller will be giving up Howard to Reimer.

After his tours of duty were completed, Howard was brought back to the United States, and was put up for adoption. He was adopted by former Hoke County Sheriff’s Deputy Deon Fuller. Things seemed to be going well and Howard seemed to be adjusting to civilian life quite well.

Alex Reimer, a retired veteran with the U.S. Army, was the man responsible for training and serving along side Howard overseas. The two had formed a very strong bond with one another, and upon retiring, Reimer wanted to have Howard back as a pet, and therapy dog.

At first, Fuller wasn’t having it. Howard had been adopted fair and square in his opinion, and was refusing to give Howard back to Reimer. In response, Reimer set up a Facebook page entitled Bring Howard Home (to view it, click here).

Fuller continued to insist that Howard was rightfully his, as he adopted the dog after his retirement from the military. He straight refused to even entertain the idea of handing Howard over to Reimer.

Yesterday however, Fuller seemed to change his mind and decided that Howard should go back to Reimer. No word on why the change of heart from Fuller happened, but it is suspected that Fuller lost his job over the national attention the case got.

This PTSD Veteran Felt Agitated During An Interview. Now Watch What His Dog Does!

rick Scott is a veteran, an army national guard for 16 years. He was deployed in Iraq. But before he went to Iraq, his father told him something he would never forget. His father said, “Son, those 11 guys, make you sure you bring them all back.” Those words stuck to Erick. But unfortunately, not all of them were able to come back with him.

Erick was guilty that he wasn’t able to bring all 11 guys back. They call it ‘survivor’s guilt’. Because of this, Erick displayed symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Then Erick heard about K9 For Warriors, an organization that provides service dogs for soldiers with PTSD. There he met Gumbo, his service dog and his new friend. Watch the video below and see what Gumbo does when he sensed that Erick was agitated during the interview!

This Video Shows How Important Service Dogs Can Be To Veterans With PTSD

It’s great see how sensitive dogs are to the feeling and needs of human beings, but it never occurred to me that dogs could do this. These guide dogs assist war veterans. They were specially trained to identify when their owners are having disturbing flashbacks or nightmares and they have learned to wake them up at the right moment.
This video shows the assistance a veteran dog can offer in helping a military veteran who is coping with severe war related trauma.

Dogs are such amazing creatures, I guess it’s true what they say, angels walk on four legs.
