Gemma had a severe, but treatable case of Demodectic Mange that covered 70% of her body. Instead of taking her to the vet, her family dropped her off at the shelter. Gemma was clearly in pain. A volunteer at the shelter, Jolene, knew she had to do something.

Jolene, also an adoption counselor at St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary (a part of Lange Foundation,) an animal rescue based in Canyon Country, took in Gemma and immediately started treatment for her condition. Already having a relationship with Gemma, Jolene took on the nearly 24 hour care of meds and baths. Within weeks, she was clearly healing. Her fur was growing back and she was putting on weight.

A little too much weight. Jolene found out soon enough that Gemma was pregnant and had been pregnant even before she left the shelter.

Gemma gave birth to 5 healthy puppies. The puppies were adopted while Gemma had to continue her treatment for mange.

But soon enough, Gemma found her perfect home too.

“My dog and I were running down the trail and all of sudden he was gone,” Banzali told KTLA News. “I backtracked and I couldn’t find him, but I could hear him crying down in the canyon.”

When Banzali located her dog and realized she couldn’t get to him she called authorities. Rescue units from Altadena, Montrose and Sierra Madre responded to the emergency call and within two hours reunited Angel with his relieved owner.

Using ropes more that 700 ft. in length, two rescuers were carefully lowered to the small ravine where Angel was lying on. The dog suffered some minor scratched and was very scared, but after luring him with beef jerky, he was secured to a pet harness and hoisted up to safety.

“I’m so thankful to these guys, the Sheriff’s Department, search and rescue, ” said Banzali. “[Angel is] going to be on the leash from now on.”

Chris Ouwerkerk, a rescue driver for the Michigan Humane Society, saved the lives of a puppy and a kitty after the two pets were abandoned in a Detroit home.

Last November, Ouwerkerk responded to a call about an abandoned puppy. When the rescuer arrived at the location, he found the dog taking cover from the cold rain in between a garbage and a recycling can.

“I noticed in front of the abandoned home there was a garbage can and like a recycling can, and there was a puppy sitting in between them,” said Ouwerkerk. “As soon as I stopped and got out of the van the puppy got up and looked over at me. I was like ‘come here puppy,’ and she ran over. She was just happy and friendly. I picked her up and when I picked her up I heard a really loud meow that was from a kitten. I started to look and there was a kitten in between the garbage can and the recycling can also.”

Ouwerkerk couldn’t leave the kitty behind, so he too was rescued.

The pets, named Camarin and Tomas and were taken to the Humane Society were they both received treatment.

Ouwerkerk recognized that Camarin and Tomas had built a strong bond while surviving life on the streets and therefore he transported them in a crate together.

Both animals have since been adopted.

Wagner is the owner of Baie St. Marie Animal Shelter in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Two years ago, after noticing that the dog was in quite a bit of distress, he decided to investigate further.  Apparently the puppy was to be used as a bait dog, and had a horribly abusive life ahead of him.  That’s when Wagner decided to step in and save the dog’s life.

Wagner carried the dog out of his life of torture, and back to the animal shelter for some much needed TLC.  After undergoing weeks of treatment, doctors and nursing staff weren’t sure if the dog would remember Wagner or his heroic rescue.

Judging from the video, one would have to think not only did Mojo remember his hero, but was so happy to see him again that he covered the man in pit bull kisses!  It was one of the biggest shows of appreciation Wagner and staff can remember.

It would be safe to say that this animal lover has got himself a good friend for life – he later adopted the little dog who clearly chose the right person to be his family member!
