UK shoppers in the city center of Cardiff were shocked and appalled to see a poor dog collapsed and being dragged helplessly behind the cart.  Rachel Lansdown told WalesOnline what happened:

Basically there were two men driving carts with ponies attached to them and the cart at the back had a dog attached to it. The men were smacking the horses to go faster and the poor dog could not keep up so was pretty much just being dragged along behind.

As the man got just outside the Admiral building by the Motorpoint Arena the carts had to stop in traffic and the dog just collapsed.  At this point people were shouting and I started to run over.

A man driving the cart sent another boy off to try and get the dog up.  He was pulling at the rope and the poor dog was just lying there lifeless. It was horrendous!  As I got to the dog a few other people started to come to help but the guy with the cart was shouting ‘kill it, kill it!’

A woman started shouting at him saying he wasn’t having the dog and at this point the boy got back on the cart and a man carried the dog to the side of the road.  I unattached her collar so she could breathe as she lay on the road. My boyfriend put his coat over her.  Another girl was also trying to get water into the dog’s mouth.

After about five minutes someone lifted the dog up and took her into the Admiral building while we all waited for her to catch her breath.  Another woman phoned the police and the dogs’ home.  We all sat with her for more than an hour and when she eventually perked up she had a good drink and a little bit of food which we had bought.

The dogs’ home eventually came to get her and before she went she gave everyone a kiss and a cuddle.  It was as if she knew we had helped her and she was saying thank you.

The dog, now called Baby Girl, was taken to Friends of the Dogs in Wales.  She has been seen by a vet and is now being pampered by staff.

The two-year-old German shepherd and Old English Sheepdog mix is lovingly called by her owner ‘Poppy The Destroyer.’ It seems there’s nothing that can hold her down. She’s like Houdini and can open locked doors, jump over baby gates, take off window screens, destroy cat door flaps, and her latest – eat through door mail slots, making large openings to stick her head through.

“She’d basically ripped off the entire letter box and had eaten her way through the front door,” Lewis Hall told the Wales Online. “Her head was just poking out staring at me. She had a really excited look on her face like ‘look mam, look what I’ve done.’

The pet owner had gone shopping after dropping off her youngest child at daycare and was looking forward to a relaxing day. Yet the plans to sit back and relax were out the door as soon as the woman realized the costly damage the pooch made.

“Coming home and seeing your dog hanging through your front door is just surreal,” said the surprised owner. “I can laugh about it now but at the time I was in shock. The first thing I thought was ‘oh my God I’ve been burgled.’”

There’s nothing to be done now, and all the woman can do is replace the door, which will set her back financially.

Lewis Hall was in the Territorial Army for 12 years and suffers from alopecia, a problem with the immune system which can often be related to stress. Even though Poppy and her path of destruction can cause lots of stress, the amount of love and laughter she gives her owner is immeasurable.

There is an online fundraiser set up to help cover the costs of a new door and alleviate the economic stress this last stunt is costing the pet owner. Any additional funds will be donated to Woofles, an animal rescue in Tredegar.

In fact, Buddy enjoys his job so much that Singer believes he’d do the job unsupervised. “Paddy’s a very experienced dog, and he will actually work very well on his own,” he said. “I sometimes think [about] whether he needs me or not to be honest.”
