Crazy Legs

When a dog sleeps on their back with all four legs pointing upwards, we call it the ‘Crazy Legs’ sleep position. According to Wide Open Pets, dogs that sleep like this are showing a combination of submission and vulnerability. With all four legs in the air, a dog’s stomach and organs are completely exposed. If this is one of your dog’s favorite positions, they are probably independent and super laidback. Whatever the case, when a dog is doing the Crazy Legs, they are letting their family know that they feel 100% comfortable and safe.

Side Sleeping

Side sleeping is hands down the most common sleep position for pups. NextGen Dog says that this position is usually reserved for naps, but it’s possible for some dogs to sleep like this for longer periods of time. The side sleeping position is more relaxing than the Curly Sue and once again demonstrates complete trust with the pup feeling comfortable enough to leave their tummy exposed. Side sleepers are usually very calm and care-free, generally having strong bonds with their families. As Holidog Times says, “A side-sleeping dog is a happy dog, indeed.”

Superman

While this is probably debatable, I’m going to say that the Superman position is definitely one of the cutest. When your dog is sleeping on their belly with all four paws stretched out and their head at ground level, they are partaking in the Superman position. According to Dog Time, this position is popular in puppies, making it easy for a dog to wake up and jump right back into playing. As a result, the Superman position is definitely an indicator of a bouncy, energetic canine!

Passed Out

The ‘Passed Out’ sleeping position is similar to Crazy Legs, except in the Passed Out position, a dog’s front paws are laying over their chest while their back legs are extended completely in the air. In this position, a dog can be lying on either their back or their side. Dog Time says the passed out position may be a sign of an overheating. This is because a dog’s paws contain sweat glands, and their belly has the least amount of fur on their body, ultimately making this position super effective for cooling off. Be aware, however; Dog’s Best Life says if your dog has their paws curled over their chest while ‘Passed Out”, they are telling you they don’t want to be bothered. Be cautious if you choose to wake them.

Belly Curl

The Belly Curl is similar to the Curly Sue, except the dog’s body isn’t as tightly wound up. When a dog does the belly curl, they may not be getting the best quality of sleep. According to Dog’s Best Life, this is because the position does not allow for a dog’s muscles to relax enough to enter the deep, REM stage of sleep. Dogs who belly curl tend to be gentle and shy— but some are the most adventurous of the pack!

Curly Sue

When a dog is sleeping with their paws tucked beneath their belly and their tail wrapped all the way around to their face, they are partaking in (what we like to call) the ‘Curly Sue’ position. Because the Curly Sue allows a dog to protect their belly and share heat in a pack, it is the most common position amongst wolves and wild dogs, according to Dogs Best Life. If your pup is doing the Curly Sue, it likely means they are either a bit cold or apprehensive about something, like a new environment or people. But don’t worry. Joyful, independent pups often sleep like this too— it’s just so cozy!

Back to Back

This position is a bit different than the others because it describes how your dog sleeps in relation to either yourself or another pooch. Dogs in wild packs huddle together to sleep, and as a result, NextGen Dog says back-to-back sleeping is an instinctual way for a dog to show you are one of the pack. According to Dog Time, back-to-back sleeping is a way for your pup to bond with you, showing you that they can trust you 100%. So, if your pup crawls into bed with you one night, don’t feel bad about giving them some love by way of a little snooze!

What is the pack order?

When dogs live in packs in the wild, they obey what is called the ‘pack order’. The order is as follows, with alphas on top and omegas at the bottom:

Alpha male and female > Betas > Omegas

According to Dog Breed Info, “Pack leaders are not aggressive, angry or bossy. Lower members of the pack are not fearful of the pack leader, but rather respectful.

“The pack leader is the stronger minded being, calm but very firm.

“Pack leaders set rules and they expect them to be followed; they set boundaries and they expect them not to be crossed; they place limits on what others are allowed and not allowed to do and they expect everyone to stay within the limits.”

What does this mean for me?

Well, when you get a new dog, your family has now become their pack. As a result of this change, it’s very important to establish yourself as the pack leader.

Happy Tails SPCA Blog explains, “Your new puppy’s first primal instinct on entering her new home is to find her place in your “pack— and she will do this by testing the boundaries you set for her.”

According to most sources, the leader of a pack will always eat first.

Dog Breed Info says that when a dog growls at you while they are eating, they are essentially saying “I am the leader and you must wait.”

However, recent sources claim that in the wild, when food is abundant, all dogs eat at the same time. So while you aren’t doing any damage by eating first, if you’re looking for a way to establish yourself as the leader of your pack, this is an easy one!

Additionally, CANIDAE states, “The dog who recognizes you as his leader and respect you will never steal food from your hand, the dinner table or your plate. He will wait until you decided it’s time for him to eat.”

The folks over at CANIDAE also say that if you can leave your food laying around without your dog touching it, that it is a “big sign” of respect.

Does your dog jump on you?

Cesar Millan says that dogs show dominance by jumping on others. So, if you let your dog jump on you, you are basically telling him that you are not the pack leader.

While you can’t exactly jump on your dog to show him who’s boss, Cesar says a great way to reassert your dominance is by simply letting the dog know it’s not okay and by learning to manage the issues appropriately.

Does your dog give you kisses?

Although some people find it annoying, dog kisses are a sign of submission.

Animal Planet explains, “In the wild and in domestic dogs, you’ll find they will lick around the mother’s mouth as newborns, and puppies still retain that instinct. It’s also sort of a submissive gesture— the more subordinate members of a pack will lick the more dominant members, and that’s important in maintaining pack harmony.”

So, if your pup loves showering you with gooey, puppy kisses, they definitely consider you to be the dominant one in your relationship!

Does your dog sleep in your bed?

According to Dog Breed Info, a dog pack usually reserves the comfiest sleeping spot for the highest ranking members of the pack. So, if your dog lets you have the bed for yourself, there’s a good chance they consider you the alpha.

If you don’t want to give up your cuddle buddy for a stupid alpha status, however, Dog Breed Info recommends putting a few rules in place:

“The dog must be invited up and not be allowed to push the humans out of the way. Making them sleep at the foot of the bed rather than, for example, on your pillow is best.”

Does your dog break eye contact first?

According to the Dog Owner’s Guide, eye contact is used by dogs to keep order in the pack. They say, ‘Only an alpha animal uses the stare to remind everyone who is in charge. When you initiate eye contact, you express your alpha position.”

Don’t start having staring contests with your pup, however— especially if they already think they are the dominant member of the pack! Dog Breed Info and the Dog Owner’s Guide both warn that if you lose, you are only reinforcing the idea that your dog is the dominant member in your household!

Does your dog stay calm during stressful situations?

When it comes down to it, pack leader is not just a position of dominance— more than anything, it is a position of respect and trust. If your dog stays calm during stressful situations, it means that they know you are there to protect them, that you are their trustworthy alpha.

One of the best ways to keep your dog calm is by staying calm, cool, and collected yourself.

Sport Dog Training Center affirms, “The alpha is not the biggest and strongest. The alpha is the smartest and the one who can remain calm under pressure. “

Does your dog let you walk through the door first?

If your dog lets you walk through the door first, it is a sign that you are in control of the “pack,” according to VCA Hospitals.

A study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings suggests that Fido may be the key to getting your snooze on.

The study surveyed 40 adults who slept with their dog in their bed or allowed their dog to sleep somewhere in their bedroom.

The humans and their dogs were outfitted with motion-tracking devices for a total of seven nights. After the study, the humans were asked questions about the quality of sleep they received.

The study found that individuals who let their dogs sleep in their bedroom, but not in their bed, were able to achieve a higher quality of sleep.

They received 83 percent sleep efficiency while those who let their dogs sleep in the bed only achieved a score of 80 percent.

Eighty percent is still considered a satisfactory score, however, people who let their pooch sleep in their bed woke up more often throughout the night than their counterparts who didn’t let Fido in their bed.

“Humans with a single dog in their bedroom maintained good sleep efficiency; however, the dog’s position on/off the bed made a difference,” the study’s conclusion read. “A dog’s presence in the bedroom may not be disruptive to human sleep, as was previously suspected.”

What’s interesting is that human sleep companions did not affect the sleep efficiency of the subjects.

“Presumably, humans accommodate the needs of their bed partner in an effort to promote sleep in a manner that even the most well-trained dog does not,” the paper stated.

Overall, the study found that having a pet sleep in the same room helped one get a good night’s rest. However, having a fidgety pet or multiple pets in the bed or bedroom caused a little disruption to one’s sleep.

“To have a purring cat or a well-behaved dog nearby may be very relaxing and conducive to sleep,” lead author Dr. Lois Krahnshe said. “Provided everyone sleeps well, it can be a benefit.”

So, if you need a to convince your partner to let your dog or cat into the bedroom you can use the Mayo Clinic’s study in your argument. However, researchers say that you shouldn’t let your loyalty to your pet get in the way of a good night’s sleep.
