Bark.com is a great website for dog lovers. They have decided to start giving dogs that very much deserve one, a “Best Day Ever.” Of course we at Life with Dogs think that this is a great idea. All dogs deserve a BDE, but here’s the story of Susie. Her former owner put her through such abuse, then finally set her on fire, and left her for dead. Now with human mom Donna, Susie’s life is much, much better.

It’s no secret that we at Bark & Co think dogs are the greatest and deserve to be celebrated, but when we came across the incredible story of Susie and her mom, Donna, we knew we had another mission. We wanted to create an opportunity for deserving dogs to have a day where their dreams come true. Thus, Dog’s Best Day was born!

As a puppy, Susie suffered horrendous abuse at the hands of her first owner. Meanwhile, her future mom, Donna, went through her own struggle. But fate brought the two together, and Susie and Donna helped each other heal. Since they found one another, they’ve gone on to do great things: from winning harsher sentencing of convicted animal abusers (Susie’s Law), to Susie’s work as a canine therapy dog for other burn victims, to educating the public through their nonprofit, Susie’s Hope.

With help from our pup-ruvin’ pals, we were able to treat Susie and her mom to a truly special day in New York City:

A Good Samaritan in Florida saw this English bulldog puppy lying by the side of the road in early September 2014.

Rather than ignoring her or presuming her dead, he called Adopt-A-Bull Rescue and then actually delivered her to the rescue HIMSELF!

“Although rescue funds are incredibly low and we don’t have any open foster homes, since the situation was urgent we acted on faith and made an emergency decision to help, confident that our supporters (locally and on Facebook) would help us once we took her in,” the rescue said at the time.

The rescue took the 15 month old puppy – who only weighed 18 pounds! – to the vet. “Besides the obvious malnutrition issues, she [was] anemic and her electrolytes and blood counts [were] all over the place,” they explained. What started out at a simply case of demodex mange has almost killed her.

Even worse, they found out that the owner of the pup, whom the rescue named Princess, had bought her at a pet store and then returned her after a short time when they found out she had mange. They didn’t want to deal with a “sick puppy.” More digging revealed the “pet store” was actually owned by a woman who operated a puppy mill, both of which are still in operation in Miami, Florida. “Princess did not have a single tick or even a flea on her which leads us to believe that she has not been on the streets for very long, if at all,” the rescue stated. “We have strong suspicions that whoever has been harboring Princess has let her purposefully deteriorate to this condition before dumping her.”

Lucky for Princess, all of her medical conditions were easily treated, and within just a few weeks she started to show improvement…

After improving at the vet, Princess went to her foster home, where she quickly bonded with her “step-bro Cliffy” and her weight and skin continued to improve.

Now, 5 months later, Princess is 19 pounds and her coat has almost completely come back!

In addition, an official case has been opened against the pet store owner and breeder, thanks to Adopt-A-Bull, Animal Service and the court. Hopefully they can prevent this from happening to any more dogs.

Louie had been abandoned in a Romanian forest with a serious injury to his paw and no food in sight. Part of his hind paw looked as though it had been chopped off; rescuers suspect the injury was the result of a hunting trap that the pup accidentally fell into while wandering.

He was alarmingly skinny, so the volunteers got him fed, then quickly moved to address his injury, as well as get him on the road to overall recovery. Once at the vet’s office, Louie is patient and very well-behaved; pretty impressive for a pup who had just been through so much! It’s amazing how even after his previous experience, Louie still manages to be so sweet to the humans who saved him. Just two weeks after being found, his tail is wagging up a storm! We would have never guessed the awful road little Louie had to take to arrive at that happy place.

Even though he is finally safe, healthy and happy, Louie is still waiting for his forever home. His foster family describes him as ‘obedient, kind and full of hope,’and a very friendly dog. Check out Louie’s full story in the video below, and if you are interested in adopting him or another animal from Howl Of A Dog, be sure to contact the organization for more info!
