Whether they’re left out in the cold or surrendered by humans who can’t take care of them, the fact remains that almost four million innocent dogs end up in shelters, and thousands more still need saving.

And these poor pups were of the latter variety. A four-legged mom and her puppy were living in a trash can when rescuers from Hope for Paws found them.

Most heartbreakingly of all, a few neighborhood kids had stolen all of her other puppies by that point. For that reason, she clung to the remaining baby for dear life.

Now all these beautiful girls need to do is find a new home, and we hope that they can stay together. If not, Zoe can at least take comfort in the fact that her little Meadow gets a second chance at life.

Many people consider that chaining a dog up is the best way to control the animal and prevent the dog from escaping. Some people even think that chaining a dog keeps the animal from harming other people or being bitten by other animals that have rabies or other disease. The people that do this kind of thing to a dog appear to never consider what the loss of freedom means to a dog.

Dogs are made to roam about, smell everything there is, and nose all the humans that they meet. Keeping a dog chained to the dog house is a form of imprisonment.

Cora was actually chained with a chain around her neck. The chain had bitten into the dog’s neck deeply enough to cause permanent wounds that could have led to death. Three other dogs lived in similar conditions in the backyard of the same home Cora “lived” at.

The dogs would still be in chains or in all likelihood be dead if not for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Heather, a volunteer worker with PETA, saw Cora and negotiated a release of Cora from her chains into Heather’s care.

Imagine spending your entire life in a metal cage. Never experiencing the warmth of the sun’s rays shining upon your face. Or feeling the sensation of grass under your bare feet. To not even be given a name, only a number tattooed on your ear. Such was the life for nine unlucky Beagles. But a life…it was not.

The dogs were to be destroyed. They had served their purpose. No longer could they be used by the research lab. So a call was made to Animal Rescue Media Education. Volunteers from ARME sprang into action, taking all nine dogs with the hope of finding them a better life…a home.

As the dogs were loaded into the ARME van, you could see the sadness in their eyes. The uncertainty of what was to come next weighing on their tiny hearts. But soon the dogs would experience the one thing that they never thought possible – freedom.

The volunteers took the Beagles to a nearby park where they were allowed to walk freely for the first time. But the wary dogs were too afraid to journey out into this strange new world. Some ten minutes passed and finally one of the dogs took its first step into what would be its new life. Shortly thereafter, others followed until one by one all of the dogs were experiencing freedom for the first time.
