Thankfully, the Coalition to Unchain Dogs found out about the situation, and the reactions of these dogs to finally being unchained is fantastic.

Belinda, an elderly woman living in North Carolina, saved two dogs who had been abandoned in her neighborhood.  But her landlord wouldn’t let her have them inside, so she had no choice but to keep them outside.  She provided them with dog houses, but there was no fence, so she had to keep them tethered.

One day, Mama’s chain broke and she escaped.  She was picked up by animal control.  They brought Mama back to Belinda instead of to the shelter.  The officer gave her the contact info for Lori Hensley, the operations director of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs.

The group came to her house to install a fence and spread hay around and in the dog houses to help keep them warm.

“We built the fence for Belinda and her dogs and gave the dogs straw because Belinda lives alone and without a car in one of the poorest and most under-served neighborhoods of Durham. She has no easy access to a grocery store or pet care stores.  Yet her dogs are well-fed and well-loved,” Hensley told BarkPost. “Belinda rescued Mama and Oreo and loves them very much.  She just needed a little help in caring for them.”

Then one day Spock’s new mom saw a shared Facebook post of one of our dogs (Meredith) that looked like the female version of her dog Zee, who she had recently lost to cancer. She sent us an application and told us she had a heart for rescuing older pitties (that doesn’t happen very often, but it’s amazing when it does!). She really liked Meredith, but knew it was important to make sure the dog she chose would be a good fit for her and her 4 year old son, Bubs. So she decided she also wanted to meet some of our other older pups, including Spock.

So one Saturday momma and Bubs jumped in the car and drove 7 HOURS from their home in NC to our adoption event in Kennesaw, GA. She and Bubs fell in love with both Spock and Meredith, but they knew that Spockie was the one for them.

A few weekends later Spock’s foster family packed up his things and drove Spock to his new home. Foster mom was super nervous because Spock doesn’t do so well with change. But her worries were put to rest when Spock barged right into his new forever home, went directly to the dog toy box, grabbed a toy, and trotted into the back yard to tear it into shreds. He clearly felt right at home!

We honestly could not have hoped for a better, more loving home for Spock. He’s so attached to his new mom and human brother (they’re the same age – how cool is that?). And they are so attached to him! Congratulations Spock, momma, and Bubs!! And thank you to Jason and the Edwards for giving Spock a loving home while he waited for his forever home.

Seeing vultures gathered around another animal is never a good sign.  In fact, it’s a macabre, pre-death funeral.  But not for Lilo.  These bird were photographed waiting around for her to become their dinner, and it’s because of them that she’s now living inside, and beloved beyond measure.

In late 2014, this saturnine photo circulated the ethersphere, bringing to light the bleakness that is the life of a chained dog.  These wonderful creatures want nothing more than to be our constant companions, yet so many humans insist on their confinement – in the bitter cold, in the driving rain, in the blistering heat – with little to no nourishment of any variety.  They often die of starvation or hypothermia, and Lilo was likely on her way to join the thousands before her who have perished in this manner.

On December 30^th of 2014, a number of concerned neighbors called the Guilford County Animal Shelter in Greensboro, North Carolina after seeing Lilo scrooched down in her meager shelter, besieged by a venue of vultures.  She was picked up by an animal control officer, and a notice was left on the resident’s door.  The owners said the vultures arrived on Christmas day (yet they chose to force Lilo to remain outside).  They said they’d be coming in for her, but they never did (*phew*).

Guilford does not allow people to adopt pit bulls from them – they have to be taken in by already inundated rescue groups, or else they’re euthanized.  Thankfully, Merit Pit Bull Foundation spoke up for her, and from there she was placed in a foster home with Keana Lynch and her boyfriend, Travis Henley.  She was named Lilo after the character in Travis’ daughter’s favorite movie, Lilo & Stitch.

The eight-month-old girl wasn’t quite ready for the vultures, but she certainly wasn’t the picture of health.  She was underweight and had some healing cuts and sores on her ears and tail.  In addition to becoming physically well, this puppy had to learn what was expected of her as an indoor pet.
