NEADS is one of several programs throughout the United States that pairs prison inmates with puppies and leads them through the training process. Once training is complete, the service dog is transferred to its permanent home, where he can put his hard work to good use. Joey Correa is an inmate who participated in the program, and he says it’s the best thing that could have possibly happened to him.

Correa spent three months teaching Chase, the energetic, loving Golden he was paired with through the program, to turn on lights, open refrigerators, and do chores. Now, this talented service dog is in his forever home with Sergeant Austin Bercher. The wheelchair-bound soldier has Correa to thank for his beloved companion, so he decided to do just that!

In the video below, Correa and Chase meet again for a sweet, moving reunion.

By now, most people know about Johnny Depp and the problems he’s facing with the Australian government.  He stands accused of trying to smuggle his dogs into the country, and law enforcement seems hell-bent on punishing him to the full extent.

Depp could possibly be facing a ten year prison term for the charges.  Apparently dog smuggling in Australia is a big problem.  Not only is there the prison term, but there could also be fines totaling over $340,000!  The pilot that brought Depp and company into the country could also get two years in jail.

Boo and Pistol, Depp’s Yorkshire terriers, were flown back to the United States earlier in the month.  Officials were threatening to out the dogs down, and all just because they were not checked in at customs properly.  Seems a bit extreme, doesn’t it?

The laws in Australia state that any dogs being brought into the country be quarantined for a minimum of ten days.  It’s in place to protect other native animals from any potential diseases, and also to protect your pets from any health issues as well.

“If we start letting movie stars, even though they’ve been the sexiest man alive twice, to come into our nation, then why don’t we just break the laws for everybody?” said  Barnaby Joyce.  Joice is the Minister Australian Agriculture.

For now, the dogs are safe back in the U.S. with Depp’s wife, Amber Heard.  Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Now tell me, does a prisoner fit that description? Before you answer that, watch this video…it’s going to change your mind.

At first, Leader Dogs for the Blind’s officials had understandable qualms about sending some of their sweet pups to a medium-to-high security prison for training.

But they gave it a try anyway.

The inmates care for the canines 24/7…

And as it turns out…

“Typically…prison-raised puppies have a higher chance of graduating than our puppies that are raised outside,” a member of Leader Dogs for the Blind commented.

Some of the inmates that participated in the program while serving their sentence have continued to work with the dogs when they get out.

…Proving that this program improves more than just the lives of the blind and the dogs leading them.

It helps the prisoners find new meaning in life, giving them a chance to give something back to society.

It’s truly inspiring.
