Leo was a Dachshund from Pancevo, Serbia.  Just like many small dogs, Leo loved to cuddle, and had never gone after another animal in his life.  Especially not anything bigger than the little guy, that’s for sure.  However, one day Leo was called to be a big, brave dog, and showed his bravery and love for his humans knew no limits.

Leo had to spring into action while playing outside with his human.  A rather large Bullmastiff went after the little girl that was playing with Leo.  He knew what to do, and jumped in between the little girl and the other dog, biting, snapping and snarling at the Bullmastiff, which was easily thrice his size.

In the end, Leo gave his life to save the little girl.  The citizens of the town have not forgotten about Leo and his sacrifice.  To honor him and his massive bravery, they have had a statue in his likeness erected in Pancevo City Park.

Nikolina Vucetic, the girl Leo defended, said, “I am so glad Leo has a monument, he turned out to be a real hero.  He helped me.”

It was the work of many animal advocates and activists that got the statue in Leo’s honor secured and paid for.  One of the activist groups said that this is the first statue in honor of a dog ever in the city, which is a huge step in the right direction considering Serbia’s less than excellent animal rights history.

Activist Ivan Kurajov  said,  “The idea was to raise awareness about how important animals are to us, and how they are always there for us when we need them.”

According to local reports, the dog entered the train station with his owner even though the pet was not a service dog. The companion pet accidentally fell over the edge and landed in the tracks, and because of the height of the train’s platform, the dog was unable to jump out on his own.

In a video posted on YouTube by user Ray Ramos, we can see how train security responded to the incident. The video shows a guard using a two-way radio to communicate with other train employees to secure the area. We also hear an announcement in Spanish asking commuters to not attempt a rescue and let train personnel take control of the situation. There are visible signs on the platform informing people that anyone who jumps over the tracks will be penalized, but even though steps are being taken by authorized personnel, commuters grow impatient and take matters into their own hands.

The dog’s owner, a woman dressed in red, can be seen calling her dog and trying to catch him while the pet attempts to jump out of the tracks, but a security guard asks her to step away from the edge.

A young woman on the other side of the tracks is concerned about the dog’s life. No one knows for sure if incoming trains have been stopped and all commuters fear the dog will soon die. We can hear the young woman ask if the tracks are electrified and after someone says no, she jumps in, secures the pet and lifts him out of the tracks and into safety. The woman is then helped out of the tracks by the security guard.

Everyone is relieved the pet and the heroic woman were not harmed. Many say the woman was very courageous and her actions were what saved the pet. However, the metro line is penalizing the young hero for violating the law.

The metro line says that for the safety of everyone, the woman and all other commuters had to step back and allow authorized personnel to secure the train line first and then they would attempt a rescue. However, witnesses say train authorities did not respond on time and that’s why they stepped in.

Local animal lovers are now criticizing the metro line and the legal systems for penalizing the heroic woman for doing what they were afraid to do – risk their lives for the live of a dog.

A woman named Carmen called the organization to report the abandoned dogs, at first the woman wondered if animal control could get the dogs, but because the woods where the pets were abandoned was outside Chickasha’s animal control’s jurisdiction, the dogs wouldn’t be picked up. Nevertheless, Wallis told the woman she would try to rescue the dogs herself.

Wallis enlisted volunteers to head to the woods and attempt a rescue. The area where the dog family was hiding had heavy brush surrounding it and the first rescue attempt was not 100 percent successful.

Rescuers spent hours luring the dogs and were only able to secure two puppies and their mom. The three of them were transported to a foster home while other rescuers stayed behind and tried to clear the dense woods around the dogs’ hiding spot.

The day turned into night and rescuers succeeded in capturing one more puppy, but the darkness of the night forced volunteers to postpone their rescue efforts until the following morning. A humane trap with food and water was left behind and everyone hoped the dogs would come out of their den on their own.

The following day volunteers returned to the woods to check on the trap, unfortunately it had not been touched and there were no signs of the puppies anywhere. Throughout that second day volunteers checked on the trap numerous times but always found it empty. By the end of the day rescuers feared the worse had happened to the lonely pups.

On the third day, Wallis brought mama dog to help rescue her remaining pups and it worked. With her on site and the help of more tasty treats, the remaining two puppies were successfully lured out of the den.

All six dogs are currently being fostered and mama dog has been named Carmel in honor of Carmen.

The five puppies are in good health, their mom on the other hand is a bit underweight, but now that she has been rescued, she is expected to gain weight and regain her health.

The building was collapsing because of the huge fire, and water was running out. But a man bravely went inside the building because his dog was trapped inside. He climbs the building like a superhero and got his dog out. But moments later, he was handcuffed by the police. Check out the daring dog rescue in the video below!

Amazing! For him, his dog was more important than obeying the police. But I’m so glad he got his dog out to safety.
