The dogs were buried below the debris for a total of four days.  Locals likely heard them crying after a couple of days and called emergency services.  It took an additional two days to get close enough to reach them.

The dogs reportedly belonged to an elderly woman who was hospitalized when her house was torn down, and it’s not clear if she knew the destruction would be taking place or if she knows about the condition of her animals.  All the dogs are now being cared for by an animal welfare group, and will hopefully have a new home to go to.

A mother dog and her six young puppies were maliciously buried alive on the campus of a university in China, but miraculously, a group of students heard their muffled cries and saved all of their lives just in time.

The students at western China’s Lanzhou University were in for the shock of their lives when they heard the frantic cries and barks coming from underground.

They quickly dug up the loosened soil and unearthed mom and all six of her nursing puppies.  The dogs had to be kept secret, so the heroic students hid them on campus and snuck them food.

When the puppies grew big enough to start wandering around, the students called Animals Asia for assistance.  The organization had room for the family at a nearby facility.

Everyone was amazed that despite the horrific treatment they had endured, all of the dogs were still so trusting and good-natured.

Before long, the puppies were weaned and eating solid food, and were ready to be adopted.  They all found loving homes in the UK (hopefully mama did, too)!

By now, almost every animal lover in the world knows about Ricky Gervais and his outspoken nature against the abuse of animals.  Now, Gervais is taking part in a full scale, international campaign to put a stop to China’s dog meat trade and festival.

Gervais and the Humane Society International (HSI) are putting together a petition that aims to put a stop to China’s use of both dog and cat meat.  He has been all over social media exposing the horrors of it all, and how we can help.  To view and sign the petition, you can simply click here.

In an interview with Fox411, Humane Society EU International Communications Director Wendy Higgins said, “Up to 10 million dogs are killed for human consumption per year across China, with around 10,000 just at the Yulin festival alone.  Undoubtedly there is still a way to go before we end this cruelty, but it is certainly a dying industry in every respect, and the number of dogs we’re seeing killed at Yulin is getting smaller year on year.  The protest against this trade from within China itself is what’s really heartening and making a massive difference.  HSI works with more than 35 animal groups and hundreds of campaigners across China who are outraged at the cruelty and want it to end.”

HSI says they are lucky to have Gervais on board with the effort.  Having his star power backing them up, along with his considerable fan base, are key to the petition, and all of the international effort.

“HSI has worked with Ricky for quite a few years now on a number of our animal campaigns, he’s an incredibly passionate advocate for animals and shares our determination to stop cruelty, so he’s a natural fit,” said Higgins.  “He’s tweeted for us about our campaigns to end the dog meat trade before, but this year is the first year we’ve teamed up with him to appeal directly to the public on a wider scale.”

When this tiny pup saw his owner suddenly pass out in the middle of a busy street in Guizhou, China, he became instantly anxious and refused to leave the ailing man’s side. Despite his small stature, the fierce fella wouldn’t budge even when emergency crews arrived. Once they managed to carry the man into an ambulance, the pup nervously paced in circles, clearly upset to be separated from the man.

It’s a good thing they let him hop on in with his owner, or else they’d have one very angry pup on their hands. The loyalty of our pets can be a truly powerful thing.

The shelter was established in 2009 by founder Wang Yanfang after she observed so many strays being captured by the local regulators.
Each of the women volunteers her time to help out. The shelter relies solely on donations.

The dogs aren’t always great at showing their gratitude; Yanfang admits to several biting incidents.

But that doesn’t stop these incredible ladies from offering help to any dog in need.

They currently house around 1,300 dogs who would otherwise be taken in and euthanized. These women and their cause are truly inspiring.

The 68-year-old man who goes by Mr. Fu contracted polio as a young boy, and now gets around with this makeshift wheelchair.

His pooch sometimes uses his paws to help his owner along, or will gently use his head to guide the axle forward.

When it’s cold out, the pooch keeps Mr. Fu’s cold feet warm by snuggling up on top of them. Now THAT’S devotion!

Mr. Fu says he doesn’t exactly know how the dog learned to help him, but it just goes to show that dogs really do care about their humans. There truly is a loving bond between man and beast. Do you think your dog would do this for you?
