According to KHON2 News, the homeless dogs were living inside a trash filled van with no clean space to rest or eat. Every surface of the vehicle and the surrounded area was covered with garbage, urine and feces.

The pets did not have a proper place to call home but they did have owners who shared the same squalid living conditions. Representatives from the animal welfare organization worked with the owners and helped them understand the unsanitary surroundings were not ideal for them or their pets. Thanks to the friendly support rescuers showed the dogs were surrender.

The Chihuahuas suffered from different skin ailments like mange and were infested with fleas and ticks. The Humane Society offered treated them and after receiving a clean bill of health they were all made available for adoption.

Today all dogs have found loving forever homes.

The sweaters are a labor of love.  Each one of them can take upwards of 20 hours from start to finish.  She started the idea about five years ago.  She had set out o make a selection of Santa Claus outfits, woolly antlers and scarves for dogs in need.  She also reconditions old blankets into coats.

“I have spent over 4,000 hours knitting but it’s all worthwhile when I see them sporting their new jumpers and hats,” said Brown.  I started knitting from an early age and after making a few coats for my own greyhounds it seemed like a great way to help the animal shelters.”

“It’s really sweet seeing them in their festive Christmas jumpers, I think they look really sweet and it’s giving much needed help to the rescue centers.  Greyhounds have very thin fur so they really feel the cold during the winter so my gifts help keep them warm during walks.”

“Making coats and jumpers for these dogs saves the rescue homes a lot of money that can be better spent saving more dogs off the streets and feeding them,” she continued.

“The rescue homes have to spend the money they raise on vets bills and nursing the dogs back to health so my coats help them to prioritize their money.  It feels like I’m knitting and sewing all the time, I’m never doing anything else – but I know it’s all worth it.”

“Whenever I send my parcels off to the rescue homes I feel really proud as I know it’s going to really help the dogs.      There are so many dogs that won’t be re-homed this Christmas so for many of them it’s the only gift they will get.”

Andrey Pinzón Trujillo told the BBC he and a group of co-workers do this every Thursday night. They always plan to spend about to hours walking the streets and feeding the homeless and sick dogs, but most Thursday nights they walk until close to midnight.

This service started about a year ago when Pinzón Trujillo volunteered in a pet health fair. During the event, local area dogs (including the homeless) received vaccines. While volunteering, the officer came across a young stray dog he fell in love with and the little dog became the officer’s inspiration to do something more to help pets in need.

Pinzón Trujillo was thinking of buying a pure breed dog, but when he met the young dog the idea of buying a pet went out the window and instead the officer decided to save the stray by adopting it.

The dog is now named Beto, and he too comes along each Thursday night to walk the street with his humans and other police officers to feed the strays. Some of those strays are Beto’s street friends.

The officer might not be able to take every single dog home, or find homes for all the strays, but he at least is inspiring people to come out and help those in need. While not all dogs find a home, they at least get a good meal.

It can be overwhelming, thinking of how to help these poor babies. But the truth is, it just takes a little organization and a whole lot of heart.

In the clip below, two organizations who dedicate their efforts to seeking out these dogs in need came together to offer them a second chance. Hope for Paws and ASPCA make it a point to find homeless, forgotten dogs wandering the street. They rescue these vulnerable pups and provide them with medicated baths, haircuts and human kindness before helping coordinate their transfer to a shelter.
