A high speed chase in Whittier, California ended when a police dog captured a naked man as he fled a stolen Hummer.

The suspect can be seen running from police in news helicopter footage below. The Telegraph reports that the car thief led officers on a high speed chase until blowing a tire and ditching the stolen limousine. As he fled on foot, it quickly became apparent that the man had forgone the formality of donning apparel before pulling of the heist.

A K-9 unit was deployed to apprehend the suspect and was able to do so in a matter of seconds. Without the benefit of clothing, one can only imagine the potential for unpleasant injuries: the man was taken to an area hospital for treatment of dog bites, but no official report of his condition was available as of last evening.

Crimes committed in the nude may be (thankfully) a rarity, but just last month, a Colorado man attempted to hold up a liquor store wearing only a pair white socks.

Patience found Brownie lying in the road after he had been hit by a car. It was heartbreaking for the young girl.

“I saw him lift his head up on the road and I bursted out crying,” said Patience.

Brownie suffered swelling in his brain from the incident, but is expected to make a full recovery. Patience used the money she had been saving up for a trip to Disney to help pay for Brownie’s treatment.

Patience is relieved that Brownie will recover, but he isn’t the first dog that has been hit by a car where she lives. She is hoping to change that and made an appointment with the Johnson County Sheriff to talk about the speeding problem in her neighborhood.

Sheriff Jimmy Dorney was impressed with Patience and the mature way she handled herself when meeting with him.

“It just shocked me that she sat across the desk from me and talked to me like and adult,” said Dorney. “She stated the facts plain and simple. This is what happened and this is the help she needed.”

Sheriff Dorney was so impressed with Patience he donated $85 to help with Brownie’s veterinary costs.

The puppies were found by police in boxes in the trunks of the cars and included Spaniels, Labradors, and Jack Russell terriers. They are now being taken care of by the Dublin SPCA. They were given veterinary check-ups which revealed several ailments in the puppies. The puppies are being treated for conditions such as mange, earmites, fleas, eye infections and parasitic infections. Several of the puppies are in special care because they were taken away from their mothers too soon. Many of the puppies also had their tails docked and dew claws removed and are receiving treatment for minor infections.

The DSPCA says this is one of the biggest cases it has seen in years. They are using this incident to remind the public about the importance of being cautious and attentive when buying a dog. “Do not buy from the boot of a car or van, and always arrange to meet the puppy with its parents at the breeders home. The conditions the mother is living in is a good indication of the health and welfare of the animals” said Brian Gillen, chief executive of the DSCPA.

This DSPCA says this incident is another reminder of the need for Ireland to push through a new Animal Welfare Bill that is currently before the Dail that would make preventing and prosecuting animal cruelty easier. The two men arrested in this incident were released but will appear before the Dublin District Court on November 1st. They have been charged with violations of the Animals Act.

The dogs will not be available for adoption until the investigation is complete, but the public will be notified when the dogs can be adopted. “When the dogs are ready to go to new homes, we will put it up on our website and our Facebook page,” said Gillian Bird, spokesperson for the DSPCA.

In contrast, ticks that are loose and wandering in the fur represent a significant tick encounter risk for YOU and other unsuspecting family members. The thick fur on many pets can make finding a juicy spot to bite somewhat challenging, even for a hungry tick! Ticks can wander in the fur for hours. As it is, ticks tend to climb upwards towards the head or axial regions on all hosts.  So, while they’re climbing around looking for a place to bite, ticks can get brushed off or even actively crawl off onto other surfaces – floor, furniture, bed, or your lap – and since you don’t have as much fur, ticks may have an easier time finding a place to bite YOU.

To protect yourself and other people in the household, kill loose and wandering ticks using tick control products with quick tick knockdown or detachment activities. It’s a TickSmart BEST practice! Once exposed, even briefly, to the quick knockdown agent on your pet, ticks generally die within an hour or so, even if they leave the pet and move onto another surface.

People living in households with “in & out” pets need to be alert for the possibility that the pet may bring ticks in from outside. Grooming the pet after each outdoor excursion and removing any loose or attached ticks promptly once found is  another TickSmart tip. If you do find a tick, either loose or attached, try to identify it; some people take a picture, even try and save it just to know what kind of tick it is.  That’s another reason that grasping the tick with pointy tweezers is a better method for safe tick removal than using little scoop-like devices, where ticks might roll or slide off and get lost on the floor or furniture.

Another TickSmart BEST practice for pet owners during tick season, wherever you live, is to get into the habit of doing a daily tick check on YOU …. even if you just stood at the door while the pet went into the yard.

If you were hoping to get the forecast in the Edmonton area last week, you might have had a difficult time – Ripple the rescue dog, who was visiting the studio, was far more interested in playing than in letting meteorologist Mike Sobel do his job!

The year-and-a-half-old mastiff mix was on set as part of an adoption advocacy segment from the Edmonton Humane Society.  Sobel held Ripple’s leash and made a valiant effort to broadcast the weather as the rambunctious dog made every effort to get his attention.

Ripple playfully chomped on his leash and finally got his way – Sobel was forced to give in and let him have the impromptu game of tug-of-war!

King of Pooches in Pines was the featured dog on the “Pet of the Week” segment, but he was ready to make his television of appearance ahead of schedule.  He didn’t wait for NBC’s Ryan Phillips to get through his weather report before excitedly jumping up onto the desk.

He exuberantly wagged his tail, desperate to give Phillips some kisses.  Flabbergasted, the meteorologist mirthfully rebuffed King’s advances, and tried to maintain some semblance of professionalism while on air.  But having dog treats in his jacket pocket didn’t help his case.

King’s devil-may-care demeanor likely worked in his favor – he was adopted not long after his TV appearance.  Pamela McGrath and David Erickson fostered him, but this goofball eventually melted their hearts and they decided to adopt him.  Now he has two other doggie siblings to romp around with.

For any dog lover, the thought of losing a fur baby is simply devastating. For this elderly mother, that horrifying thought became a reality, when her energetic black dog went missing several weeks before Mother’s Day. Incredibly, her children, thanks to help from social media followers who located the pup, were able to reunite the sweet pair.

Personally, my heart dropped while watching this…it’s a combination of relief and shock and just utter love that erupts between this dog and its owner, an owner who had probably accepted the fact that she would never see her companion again. What’s even more amazing?

Her kids coordinated the reunion the day before Mother’s Day! What a happy weekend that must have been.

Lacey, a pit bull mix was rescued by The Lake City Humane Society in Florida along with her only living puppy. With regular feeding and a foster family to care for her, she and her one puppy were slowly nursed back to health.

After being saved, Lacey became a savior, taking on two litters of puppies that had been abandoned and nursing them as her own – a total of 17 puppies, including her pup.

Lacey took the first ten puppies in and nursed them for eight weeks until they could be weaned and moved into their foster homes. Lacey’s mothering instinct kicked in again when she took on another six abandoned one-day-old puppies.

“We have fantastic volunteer foster families who help with our homeless pets, but we could always use more,” said Laura Page, director of the Lake City Humane Society. “With Lacey, we have seen a great example of a dog who is willing to be a mother to so many puppies. She is so loving and gentle with them – but now she needs a break from motherhood.”

Lacey will be spayed with funds received from a grant from Florida Animal Friend and placed up for adoption when she is finished nursing them. Florida Animal Friend’s mission is to help save the lives of countless unwanted cats and dogs by supporting organizations that offer free or low-cost spay and neuter services across the state of Florida. The $25,000 grant money awarded to the Lake City Humane Society was part of a$600,000 total distributed to various grant winners by Florida Animal Friend throughout the state of Florida in 2014.

“This is a great example of what the funds from the sale of Florida Animal Friend license plates can do,” said Lois Kostroski, executive director of Florida Animal Friend. “The Lake City Humane Society will be able to spay Lacey once she is finished nursing this brood. And, each one of the 17 puppies that she nursed will also be spayed and neutered before being adopted.”

Even when her puppies had been trapped, the poodle who was given the name Tootsie, had evaded capture. Her puppies were placed in forever homes, while she remained elusive.

The Smiths started Blue Guardian Rescue to help improve the lives of homeless dogs in Houston, Texas. They are the “go to” team when a stray dog is spotted in Houston.

It look the Smiths a bit to find her, as she covered a fairly large area. As soon as they did spot Tootsie, they set the trap near where they had seen her.

“Find a nice calm area, set the trap, and bait it,” explains Eliot.

But Tootie’s wasn’t going to come easily – she went in the trap, but as soon as the door started to close – she sprinted out.

“Sometimes if they get really erractic, you have to give them space and let them calm down,”says Eliot.

Finally, Eliot was able to net her and then put her in the trap.

Though clearly scared at first, she calmed right down, as if she knew she was being saved.

Lots of us celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with rainbow cupcakes and green beer and general merriment, but what if our dogs want to get in on the fun! The Irish holiday, which is Tuesday, March 17th, is a great opportunity to treat your furry pal to some homemade, dog-friendly shamrock goodies. This healthy, easy to follow recipe is sure to make any pup feel lucky – with just a few ingredients that you probably already have on hand, your best friend can join in on the St. Patrick’s Day fun!

The breakdown of the recipe is included below, and be sure to check out the original video which shows some enthusiastic Huskies watching their human prepare the yummy shamrock snack!

Shamrock Dog Treats

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup of whole wheat flour
1 cup of cooked peas (canned or frozen)
1 cup of spinach
1/4 cup canola oil
1 egg
tsp sea salt
1 additional egg for egg wash
DIRECTIONS:
-Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit

-Mix the dry ingredients in a big bowl

-Puree the Peas and the Spinach together in blender or food processor

-Add the green mix to the dry mix, and then add 1 egg

-Blend it all together until it forms a dough

-Cover your bowl, or wrap your dough and chill for 20 – 30 minutes

-After it’s chilled, sprinkle it with a bit of flour and roll it out to between 1/4 – 1/2 inch thick, then cut into fun shapes!

-After you place them on a cookie sheet you can lightly egg wash them to make them shiny. Back for 20 – 30 minutes and enjoy!

When Penman took leo to the vet, she learned that he was paralyzed in his hind legs as the result of a broken back. None of the shelters she contacted after learning the devastating news felt able to care for this brave boy. Penman decided to set up a GoFundMe campaign in an attempt to earn enough money to fly Leo back to Canada with her.

Donations starting pouring in, and after three months, Penman had raised over $7,740 to cover the cost of Leo’s move to Canada and medical bills. An additional page was set up to continue raising money for future expenses, including a custom wheelchair for Leo.

Despite the sad way this story began, it has a very happy ending, since Leo has found his forever home in Ontario, Canada with a woman who read about his story on Facebook and was inspired to adopt him.

We are so glad Leo is getting this second chance!
