Louise was adopted as an eight-week-old puppy, and even at that young age she wanted dominance over her house.

“She put us to the test when she was little,” Wilson told PEOPLE. “We really had to establish that we were the boss, because she was trying to rule the roost. These ears – at first they crossed they were so defiant.”

Every puppy is a handful, but at one point things got so bad that Wilson’s wife, actress Dagmara Domińczyk, wanted to return her to Ruff Rehab in New Jersey.

“She tested our will, certainly. There were times early on when my wife was like, ‘I’ve got to give her back!’ I was like, ‘We’re not giving her back!’”

Things changed when their second dog died of cancer. Louise seemed to sense that her role in the family had changed, and she turned into an affectionate little kissy-face. She has opened her family’s eyes on the challenges and triumphs of animal adoption.

“When you rescue a dog, you just don’t know what you’re going to get,” Wilson explained. “Every dog is different, just like every kid is different, and you hope for the best. It taught us a lot of understanding, and how to deal with an animal like that. We really believe in rescuing, and she’s brought us so much joy and love.”

Meet Capt. Jack. As a puppy – beyond adorable. I knew he was our next dog. As most rescue stories start, it wasn’t a happy one. He was dumped on a cold country road at night in Dec., six-eight weeks old. The country vet, whose wife happened to be hubby’s high school classmate, took him in. She posted pictures, hoping to find his forever home. Hubby saw the pics and I cajoled that we could foster. He agreed to foster, but I knew we were his forever home and the “fostering” was a ruse. We went to meet Capt. With our other rescue pup, Chloe, whose start was just as rough.

Chloe and Capt. were BFFs instantly. Loading Capt. in the car, my husband realized this was forever, not foster. The vet’s wife, thrilled he was ours, she saw red flags with him and was she right! We had challenges galore. Capt. was very different from our five previous rescues. He was scared of men, the dark, strangers, and the vet. He has fear aggression. He’s curious about everything and afraid of it all. He lunges at people and tries to nip. He bullies around the house and terrorizes our two cats. Mortal enemies are critters, he chases and on occasion catches.

He’s expensive with double knee surgeries. He ripped his toenails so badly, needed a vet visit to stop the bleeding, snip and wrap foot. He’s on Prozac. He’s doped for vet appointments. He has incredibly stinky gas. He can’t handle temperature extremes.  He lays on air conditioning and in front of furnace wall vents. He survived the great “Christmas Tree Massacre of 2012.”  He pulled glass bulbs off the tree and chewed them, and littered the room with glass shards.

He hates delivery people.  His battle with the neighbor’s cat ended in defeat and left Capt. a bloody mess.  He’s cute but not cuddly, a terrible combo. People always want to pet him. He’s not the brightest bulb on the tree, but he sure is the cutest. Cute can get you far.

On top of all that and his many other quirks, we love him fiercely. Our vet has said time and again, Capt. Jack is lucky to have us. Most other people would have given up and likely euthanized him. Capt. Jack, long may he reign!

Mercy was found on the side of the road, in and unbelievable state.  There were so many broken bones, that she couldn’t stand up.  In this condition, most people would probably want to give up.  But not Mercy.  Not the eternal optimist.

She couldn’t stand, and was in what was probably an astounding amount of pain, but as soon as she realized that the people approaching her were there to help and not hurt, she just couldn’t contain her joy.  She just HAD to try to stand up and greet her rescuers, tail going half-a-mile-a-minute.

Once she was saved, and brought to have some medical attention, everyone around her was just amazed by her disposition.  Here’s a dog that has clearly seen some of the worst the world has to offer, and regardless her spirit was not remotely broken.  Her recovery began soon after, and now she’s walking again.

Soon, Mercy will be ready for a new home.  She’s still working on her recovery, but to everyone’s amazement, she’s expected to make a full recovery.  Could you imagine being the lucky family that gets to welcome her in?!  We’re already jealous!

She was rescued by Muttville Senior Rescue in San Francisco.  When she was found, her teeth were in such bad shape, they had to all be removed.  This may have left her without teeth, but it also gave her a deep understanding of what it means to suffer with this type of problem.  Perhaps this is what makes her absolutely perfect for her current job.

Karma was adopted by Debra Garrett.  She was looking for a companion dog for her elderly mom, and from the moment Garrett met Karma, she thought that it would be a perfect fit.

“My mom is 82 with Alzheimer’s and really wanted a dog,” said Garrett to The Dodo.  “We did not want her to have a dog that was likely to outlive her or that would require a lot of training and energy. Muttville provided us with the perfect solution for my aging parent, an older dog that was tried and true.”

However, things just weren’t meant to be.  It became very clear very quickly that Garrett’s mother just wasn’t ready to take care of Karma.  Garrett and her husband didn’t want to take Karma back to a shelter or rescue, and ended up taking Karma in themselves.

“Karma is the sweetest, quietest, most loving little dog we ever could have asked for,” said Garrett.  “She loves people and just wants to be held or cuddled by someone.”

Garrett and her husband both work at a dental practice.  The job often requires them to work long hours, which when they didn’t have a dog was fine.  However, they didn’t feel right just leaving Karma at home alone for all of that time.  So, they eventually decided to bring her to work with them.

Karma being the sweet dog that she is, and having such a strong desire to just be with someone, it didn’t take very long for the Garrett’s to realize that this was where Karma belonged all along.  She seemed to have an innate ability to calm patients that were very anxious to be in the dental chair in a way that no human had ever been able to before.

“It’s magical to watch a true dental-phobic patient melt while holding Karma in one of our chairs,” said Garrett.  “Even patients who didn’t think it would help much found that their appointment went much better with Karma on their lap.”

Maybe it’s because she’s been through it all herself and knows just how scary the dentist can be.  Maybe she’s just so full of love and thankful every day for being rescued.  At the end of the day, the reasons don’t really matter, Karma is PERFECTLY suited to do what she does, and she enjoys it so much.  Apparently, having a mouth full of really healthy teeth are NOT a requirement for being a dental therapy dog.

“She fills me with a sense of contentment whether I am holding her myself or watching her with one of my patients or seeing her in her little bed,” said Garrett.  “The office is a much better environment with Karma working beside us!”

Amanda Herring and Greg Selz met when they were in middle school, but neither could have anticipated that they would be a happily married family years later.

“We were friends, never dated,” Amanda told The Dodo. “I would have said you were crazy if you told me I’d be married living with Greg Selz 14 years later, and we’d have an old dog.”

They went their separate ways after school, but their paths crossed in 2010, and they spent the next two years in a long-distance relationship.  Finally last year they found a place close to where they’d grown up in Washington DC.

“Our first priority was to find an apartment where we could have a dog,” Amanda said.

She found an older chow on the website for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, but when they went to visit, she had already been adopted.  However, her older sister Brendinie was still there and in need of a home.  She was in need of a bath, and wasn’t interested in visitors.  It would likely take a long time before anyone decided to adopt her.

“She would need a lot of time to get adjusted, wouldn’t do well with kids, and was already probably nine years old.  Our hearts melted.”

Amanda and Greg adopted her and changed her name to Bubbe, which means grandmother in Yiddish.  They knew that the adjustment period would be a challenge, and for the first few days Bubbe wouldn’t eat and she snarled at them when they entered a room.  But the barrier broke down a bit when she took some baby food off of a spoon.

Their relationship grew as they worked on teaching her basic commands:  “She wanted to make us happy, and she was trying so hard,” Amanda explained.

Now that Bubbe understands she’s home, she’s a lot more comfortable.  She wags her tail when she sees mom and dad, and though she still is aloof towards strangers, she loves snuggling and has bonded with Greg’s mom’s dog.

When the couple got engaged and started working on wedding arrangements, they knew they wanted Bubbe to partake in their special day.  But they understood her wariness of new people, and didn’t want to overwhelm her.

“She was right next to me all morning while I did my makeup, got dressed and got my hair done,” Amanda said.  “We took her out for a walk during dinner.”

She was also in a few photos, which are certainly mantle-worthy.  Having Bubbe isn’t effortless, because she isn’t in the greatest of health and needs vet visits and numerous walks per day, so the couple cannot come and go as they’d like, but they aren’t bothered.

“It sounds like a chore, but it’s actually what makes our lives more meaningful,” Amanda said.  “Before Bubbe, it was just the two of us,” she says. “She’s made the two of us into a family.”

Sometimes in rescue, the heartbreak becomes unbearable. Today is one of those days. We fell in love with this precious dog the second we laid eyes on her. It was a video taken at Fulton County Animal Services in Georgia. At the time, we had no idea she was pregnant. Once we found out Lily Rose was pregnant, we knew her situation was urgent. We reached out to our Maryland vet partner & of course they said they’d help! We knew LR was around 55 days along and we also learned she was heartworm positive & had demodex mange. We moved mountains using a private transport to get her to MD before her babies came.

Monday night, Lily’s temp dropped & she was heavily panting. We were sure the puppies were coming, but no. The X-rays showed they were close & moving a lot, but just weren’t moving to the birth canal. Her mucus plug came out & again we anxiously awaited the birth. Finally last night, her medical team said we have to induce labor, mama is uncomfortable & starting to moan some. This morning still no puppies!

The decision was made to do a C-section as time had run out. We could not wait any longer. We knew the risk with mama’s heartworm, but we had no choice. Something was wrong. When they got in, they discovered a large stillborn puppy was blocking the birth canal! No wonder no puppy could get out. At this same time of removing the puppies to safety, mama went into cardiac arrest & passed. The medical team tried desperately to get her back. They worked on her for a full 10 minutes. Such an emotional roller coaster knowing mom was gone & yet still trying to save her 8 living puppies!

Ugh, what a nightmare!! Lily Rose will be buried with her stillborn puppy & both were tearfully kissed goodbye.  We will never forget this happy, smiley girl, but all we can do to honor her now is to fight like heck to save her babies. We promise you Lily Rose, we will move mountains for them as we did for you!  RIP Lily Rose! We will ALWAYS love you & NEVER forget you.

Pocahontas, who had been at the Maryland vet when Lily Rose arrived, had given birth four weeks earlier, and her puppies were just starting to be weaned.  The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, and she had no problem taking on a new brood.  You’d think that raising sixteen puppies would be too much for any dog, but once you’ve had eight, what’s another eight more?  All are healthy and thriving!

Alfie’s former owner kept him chained up outside.  All day, every day, for years, with nothing but concrete to lie on.  And then, because he barked and cried to come in, his muzzle was taped shut.  Neighbors had enough of being ignored by the SPCA, and at this last straw, jumped the fence to save him from the abuse.

It seems that for making simple mistakes that every puppy makes while learning, Alfie, who was nameless at the time, was forced to live outside by his impatient and unloving owner.  For scratching at the door to be let in, he was chained so he couldn’t come near it.  For crying out to be loved and pay attention to by his family, he had his mouth tightly taped closed.

It was obvious what kind of toll the years of being shackled was taking on him; he lunged and snapped and barked incessantly.  Next door neighbors watched Alfie endure this abuse and neglect, which tormented them as much as it did him.  They called the SPCA repeatedly, but as keeping a dog tethered wasn’t illegal, there was nothing they could do.

So the neighbors took matters into their own hands.  One day they hopped the fence and cut Alfie free.  It is unclear just what happened to him at this point, but as Animal Advocates Society posted his story, likely it is they who took him in.

To keep such an intelligent and social creature so isolated, unstimulated, and uncomfortable is immoral, and Alfie was very sensitive after the years of mental anguish.  But over time, he healed.

He was blessed with a new family, one who was every bit as loving as his previous one was heartless.  He rejoiced in being free to run, play, and snuggle.

Alfie was cherished by his human family members, and befriended by a dog buddy who looked a lot like him.  Though he is no longer alive, he spent every single day of the rest of his life being happy and free.

When Anna was rescued by animal control officers in Union County, South Carolina, she was completely emaciated and tethered to a tree with a neck tie.  She was only 28 pounds, heartworm positive, and had been abandoned after she was used up from having many litters.

She spent the next five years getting Anna healthy and helping her overcome the traumas of her past.  The bond between them grew so strong, it even inspired Heidi to found the rescue group Boxer Butts & Other Mutts.

“Because of her, over 3,000 dogs’ lives have been changed,” Heidi explained.

Sadly, Anna was diagnosed with bone cancer in her right front leg, which then spread to her lungs.  She was given three to six months to live.

But they couldn’t know how much perseverance she had.  Her diagnosis was a year and a half ago, and Anna is still hanging on.  Heidi says she still welcomes every foster dog who enters their home.

“Most of them are on death’s door and she will not leave their side.  Even on her bad days she continues to try to take care of others.”

Recently, she was feeling pretty bad, and lie on the front porch, feeling lethargic.  Izzy walked over to her and gingerly licked her face for over half an hour.

“Anna had also helped take care of Izzy when she suddenly got really sick a couple of years ago,” Heidi said.  “It seemed Izzy remembered and did her best to comfort Anna.”

No matter how much time Anna has left on this planet, she can rest comfortably knowing she is surrounded by love.

I’m sure there are many of you out there who have a World’s Greatest Dog, right? Well if there were an award, our rescued three-legged pit bull Bella would definitely receive a nomination — if not take home the gold.

When we started fostering with our local shelter we already had a fairly good idea of how Bella would react to the new house guests. She had already befriended a rescued cow, watched over piglets saved from slaughter, and looked after battery-caged chickens from the largest farmed animal rescue in California’s history. But we never anticipated just how stellar her mothering skills would be.

Pit bulls are often victims of prejudice and discrimination, but contrary to popular conceptions this breed has some of the most gentle and stable temperaments. In 2011, the American Temperament Test Society showed the American pit bull terrier scored an overall temperament rating of 83.9 percent compared to the 77 percent score of the general dog population. I know this, and a quick Google search will easily tell you the same. But I want you to see and experience this.

So far, Bella has helped me care for three litters of kittens, and she has always been gentle and kind. She gladly shares her water bowl, her dog bed, and her human attention. She takes turns grooming them, and they greet her every morning by curling around her legs, and cry when she comes in from her walks.

Bella is doing her part to make sure these kittens are well adjusted and adopted into their forever homes. When they head back to the adoption floor in a few weeks, their enclosures will proudly read, “dog-friendly”.

My name is Danielle and I created this GoFundMe page on behalf of my second furry kid, Vlad. We adopted him when he was two years old from Hillside S.P.C.A in Schuylkill County, nearly a two-hour drive from our home. He was known as “Chance” while he was there. We adopted him to keep our wild first furry kid (Zoey) in check – she is an alpha dominant female, the funny thing is Vlad wound up being our alpha dominant male. They had a rough patch the first couple of weeks, but have become inseparable.

When Vlad was five years old, my husband and I decided to have our first human kid. We initially expected Zoey to become our son’s protector, being the female, but to our surprise Vlad filled that role as if our son was his own. When we brought our son home from the hospital Vlad honestly tried to carry him off and claim him as his own. Vlad barely slept for three days straight those first few nights. If our son made a peep, Vlad was right there to check on him. Vlad would not let anyone near our son, not even my parents. To this day, Vlad watches over our oldest son who is now six years old. He is now a “big brother” to our second human son who is 20 months old. Vlad is known as “Bubba” to our sons, which is also each of their first words.

Near the end of December 2015, we noticed a change in Vlad’s eating behavior. He started to slow down eating and Zoey was actually beating him out of the kitchen. This was unlike him because he will gobble food up like it is going out of style. We took him to the vet thinking maybe there was something wrong with his teeth. Our vet had noticed a growth about the size of a nickel hanging down from his upper right side of his mouth. We never noticed it ourselves because Vlad would not let us get that close. The vet said it looked suspicious. He suggested we do a dental cleaning and he would remove the growth to be biopsied. Vlad’s blood work came back great the evening before his dental cleaning, so I thought we were in the clear of it being anything serious.

A week after his dental cleaning the biopsy was found as “probable cancer” because of the amount of cells that were seen. I was devastated and heartbroken to say the least as I’m sure many of you would have been, too.

We took Vlad to an oncologist at VSEC in Levittown. She said the cancerous cells were low meaning it is a low grade cancer and does not appear to be an aggressive kind. She took chest x-rays and, thankfully, his lungs were clear. However, he has restricted airflow in his right nasal passage and she is concerned there is a blockage in his nose or quite possibly a tumor growing inside. The only way to check in his nasal passage is via a CT scan.

I swore to Vlad that I would fight as much as I could financially. This is what led me to creating a GoFundMe page for Vlad. We only need approximately $1,200-$1,500 for the CT scan. Then depending on those results we may or may not do radiation therapy and that is approximately $3,000 – one treatment a week for four weeks. I absolutely would like to have the CT scan done but with our budget we can use help, so I am reaching out to my family and friends as well as others who may be or have been in my position. GoFundMe is the means to help raise money for Vlad, so intend to try my best to do so.

I am hoping to raise at least $1,200 to start so we can get the CT scan done as soon as possible this way we have more answers and can develop a more solid game plan to help Vlad.

The CT scan has been scheduled on 3/14/16 @ 10am with VSEC.

Vlad is an important part of our family, not only to my husband and me, but he is a huge part of our children’s lives. He is the greatest furry family member that we could have ever asked to be in our lives. We saved him from uncertainty in the shelter and he grew into an amazing pup. I’m so proud to have him in our family and I plan to fight for him as long as I’m able to. I owe it to him because he will be turning 11 years old on 3/21/2016 and I feel in my gut that he has many years ahead of him as long as we are able to help him along. I am hoping that many of you can open your hearts and help our Vlad.

The two-year-old dog was found wandering the streets with both of his eyes so badly damaged, they were propping out of his head.  He had been picked up by someone, and brought to emergency animal medical technicians with the Arizona Humane Society, and he was rushed into surgery.

They were able to save Ashton, but not his eye, leaving him blind.  One of the eyes, according to surgeons, had been damaged in that way for quite some time, and the other was a bit more recent.  No matter what, both had to be removed, which would make finding a forever home a bit more difficult.

Medical staff has been helping Ashton adapt to life as a blind dog, and his new forever family will have to have saint-like patience with him as he adapts, but his new family is confident that they can provide for him a great place to live, and all of the love and understanding that he’ll need to have a happy life.

Even though things did not at all start off well in life for Ashton, he is described as full of pep and life, and a very, very sweet dog.  His new family promises to do whatever they have to make Ashton’s life a really great one from here on out.

“Bad dogs have an overwhelming desire to bring you things,” Megan Parker told The Guardian. “Dogs love telling you what they know. They have an inability to quit.”

Parker is the director of research at Working Dogs for Conservation in Montana. She searches shelters for difficult, “unadoptable” dogs who’d have no problem putting poachers in their place.

Ruger was born on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana. When he was young, his owner shot his littermates, but he was able to flee. He wound up in a shelter, where he was noticed by a trainer who told WD4C about him.

At first, Ruger was aggressive, and would bite people. Parker had a hard time getting him to the vet, and he hated small spaces. But there was something about him that encouraged her to keep working with him. However, there was something else that stood in Ruger’s way of becoming an anti-poaching dog at all.

“Early on in his training, Meg was under pressure from her colleagues to decide if Ruger would make the cut,” said Pete Coppolillo, executive director at WD4C. “If a dog doesn’t work out, we make sure they have a forever home. We all wondered if Meg should start finding a place for Ruger, who was losing his sight.”

But she knew that Ruger had the drive necessary to make the cut.

“These dogs have an unrelenting drive,” she said. “For a dog that doesn’t stop, you can train that dog to bring you things.”

Parker was eventually able to match up Ruger with the Delta Team scouts, a law enforcement unit operated by the South Luangwa Conservation Society and the Zambia Wildlife Authority.  The scouts had little experience with dogs, and were leery of the idea that a dog could help.

Ruger proved his worth at his first day on the job.  Roadblocks were set up to search vehicles for illegal paraphernalia.

“It takes humans an hour or more to search a car,” said Coppolillo, “whereas it takes dogs three to four minutes.”

Ruger sat down and glared at one of the passing cars.

“That’s his alert [signal],” Coppolillo continued.

Several pieces of luggage were inside the vehicle, and the scouts who searched them came up empty-handed.  But Ruger kept his eye on one bag, which contained a matchbox in a plastic bag.  Inside of it was a primer cap, which ignites gunpowder in the illegal muzzle loaders that poachers rely on.

“At that moment, everyone believed that Ruger knew what he was doing,” said Coppolillo. “They learned to think of Ruger as a colleague.”

Now he’s been a valuable team member for a year and a half.

“He’s a hero who’s responsible for dozens of arrests and has convinced many skeptics of his detection skills,” Coppolillo noted.

Some people likened his skills to witchcraft, but at a courthouse demonstration, a scout hid a piece of ivory and Ruger found it in only a couple minutes.  And his deteriorating vision hasn’t impaired him one bit.

“His skills have sharpened.  He’s working with a few younger dogs, who are somewhat goofy and get distracted like most puppies do,” Coppolillo said. “Ruger remains focused despite many distractions, such as having wild animals close by. Baboons are the worst. His lack of eyesight works in his favor because he almost entirely focuses on his sense of smell.”

Because the work is very dangerous, Ruger does not have to work every day, and Godfrey, a scout, rewards him with games of tug-of-war when he nabs someone.

“Poachers are well-armed and well-trained,” Coppolillo said. “African elephants don’t live throughout the continent. Poachers kill elephants where they reside and smuggle them to places where they don’t live to throw law enforcement off their tracks.”

Though it is illegal to hunt within South Luangwa National Park’s boundaries, poachers do it anyway, and over the years, many scouts have colluded with them.  Good scouts are hard to come by, and in Africa, it’s even more difficult to find dogs like Ruger.

“Good dog selection is absolutely essential,” Coppolillo said. “Village dogs simply don’t have the drive to do this kind of work. There are only a handful of suitable and reputable kennels in Africa. Most are focused on selling security and military dogs, so they’re not as well socialized as a conservation dog needs to be. Plus, they generally sell those dogs for much more than what it would cost us to source a dog in the US.”

Parker will continue her dedicated work of finding suitable American shelter dogs to send to Africa to keep saving the lives of countless elephants.

“The kids are over the moon with our new family member.  Fluffy is pure joy,” Gisele Bündchen said on Instagram.

The pup was adopted from Wags and Walks, a rescue group in LA. Tom and Gisele also have two other dogs – pit bull mix Lua, and Scooby, a beagle they adopted last year.

“Thank you @wagsandwalks for all you do and for letting us rescue this little angel,” Gisele said.

The couple dotes on all their kids – human and dog.  Gisele’s Yorkie, Vida, who passed away in 2012, even had a part in her 2009 wedding to the Patriots’ quarterback. (I suppose I can take a break from hating him during the off-season.)

“Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba.  Sithi uhm ingonyama.”  (Here comes a lion, Father.  Oh yes, it’s a lion.)  That’s the Zulu chant at the beginning of the Circle of Life, in case you were wondering.  I know you were – we’ve all faked our way through that line.
