Mercy was found on the side of the road, in and unbelievable state.  There were so many broken bones, that she couldn’t stand up.  In this condition, most people would probably want to give up.  But not Mercy.  Not the eternal optimist.

She couldn’t stand, and was in what was probably an astounding amount of pain, but as soon as she realized that the people approaching her were there to help and not hurt, she just couldn’t contain her joy.  She just HAD to try to stand up and greet her rescuers, tail going half-a-mile-a-minute.

Once she was saved, and brought to have some medical attention, everyone around her was just amazed by her disposition.  Here’s a dog that has clearly seen some of the worst the world has to offer, and regardless her spirit was not remotely broken.  Her recovery began soon after, and now she’s walking again.

Soon, Mercy will be ready for a new home.  She’s still working on her recovery, but to everyone’s amazement, she’s expected to make a full recovery.  Could you imagine being the lucky family that gets to welcome her in?!  We’re already jealous!

A five-month-old Cane Corso named Sidon was saved by Penn Vet’s Shelter Dog Specialty Medical Treatment Project, making him the 100th dog aided by the program since its launch in March 2015. The life-saving program is made possible through the generosity of the Richard Lichter Charity for Dogs.

When a shelter dog has a medical problem that requires specialty care, shelters often do not have the resources necessary to address the animal’s needs. Experts from Penn Vet’s Shelter Medicine Program and partner facilities select dogs to enroll in the

Shelter Dog Specialty Medical Treatment Project. Through this program, veterinarians at Penn Vet’s Ryan Hospital provide specialized medical care to dogs from area shelters that are in need. All diagnostic and medical services are covered free of charge to participating shelters. Following treatment, dogs are placed in foster homes and made available for adoption.

“It is incredible that we’ve been able to give 100 dogs a second chance at life through Richard’s tremendous support,” said Dr. Brittany Watson, Director of Shelter Medicine and Community Engagement at Penn Vet. “The Shelter Dog Specialty Medical Treatment Project has been so impactful for our students, staff, and shelter partners, enabling us to collaborate with the shelter community to save the lives of dogs in need.”

“This has been a wonderful opportunity to give a helping hand to dogs who just need some medical assistance in order to be adoptable,” said Richard Lichter.

Sidon arrived at the Pennsylvania SPCA with an extremely swollen neck and shoulder. The swelling appeared to be progressive, so he was sent to Penn Vet’s Ryan Hospital for advanced diagnostics, intensive care, and possible surgery. Sidon was placed on antibiotics, which helped to lower his fever and swelling. A CT scan revealed a fluid-filled tract that spread from the base of his tongue to the thorax and the mediastinum, as well as to the shoulder blade and along the back. The extensive infection was the result of an unknown injury, most likely a penetrating foreign body.

Drs. Lillian Aronson and Christine Hsueh performed surgery to debride and flush out the abnormal tissue. They also placed a closed suction drain to remove additional fluid post-surgery.

Sidon recovered very well and the drain was removed after 36 hours. Today, he is happily residing with his foster parent, Allison Vetter, CVT, one of the nurses who cared for him at Ryan Hospital.

“I tell everyone how wonderful the Shelter Dog Specialty Medical Treatment Program is,” said Vetter. “It makes a big difference for dogs who wouldn’t otherwise have a second chance at life. I have high hopes for Sidon.”

Established in 2006, the Penn Vet Shelter Medicine Program programs consultative, educational, and veterinary support to regional shelters and residents of the Greater Philadelphia community. The program has a significant impact on how many homeless animals are given quality care and placed into permanent homes. In addition, the program provides interdisciplinary and authentic instruction to veterinary students through the lens of shelter medicine, by integrating best practices in educational techniques and research with community outreach, collaborative partnerships, and service learning.

Carl Gough says the attack began in the kitchen of his Manchester apartment when the woman beat her four-year-old dog with a shoe. She then chased Lennox down a hallway and kicked him.

A UK man was thrown out of his home when he confronted his pregnant landlady for hitting her Rottweiler with a shoe and kicking him numerous times.  When he posted the video online and reported the crime to police, he was told there was nothing they could do because “it’s only a dog.”  Thankfully, the dog has now been removed from this house of horror.

“I have been out with some friends and came home. I opened the door and went to the kitchen and she must have not seen me or something,” the bartender explained.

“I saw her beating the dog. It was horrific to watch. I asked her what she was doing and she said she was punishing it because it wouldn’t sit down.

“She then started kicking it in the hallway. Afterwards she kicked off me with when I confronted her and threw me out.

“She said there wasn’t a problem with it and that her partner also beats up the dog. I’m scared for its safety. It needs to be removed.

“I’d only been living there for two weeks and she’s kicked me out now.  I’ve got nowhere to go so I’m going to end up sleeping on the streets.”

Gough had only been living in the two-bedroom apartment for a couple of weeks, and thankfully he was there to film the brutal incident.  He posted the video online, and contacted the RSPCA and called police.

“The police turned around to me and said they can’t do anything because it’s only a dog. They said if I don’t pull the videos down I can get done for harassment.

“I was absolutely disgusted. I haven’t done anything wrong yet the police are telling me I’ll get arrested and doing nothing about her.”

After numerous posts were made on the RSPCA’s Facebook page, they told concerned folks:

“This dog is now in our care and we are investigating. A date has been set to interview the person in the video but, as our investigation is ongoing, I’m afraid we can’t give any more information at this time.”

Hopefully the investigation will ensure that Lennox is not returned to his home and that this heartless woman charged with abuse, which most certainly is against the law in Manchester and all parts of the UK.  Click here if you’d like to visit the Greater Manchester Police’s Facebook page and give them a piece of your mind.

A few years later, while Alex and his mother were driving, they happened upon an injured pit bull running in the middle of the street. Naturally, Alex had to help

“I was pulling off the side of the road when I hear Alex’s car door open,” his mother, Valinda Cortez of Canton, North Carolina, told The Dodo.  “Before I could stop him, he was out in the middle of the road with this dog.”

Completely disregarding his own personal safety, Alex grabbed up the injured pup and got the dog into the car.

“He picked up this bloody baby and brought him to the car,” she said.  “We got him all healed up and now he lives a wonderful spoiled life.”

Now, Alex is 16.  Recently, he became a part of a vastly different kind of rescue than what he was used to.  It was the kind of rescue that be highly emotional, and can push people to their breaking point.

“He’s helped before in animal shelters and homeless shelters but this time was different,” said Valinda.

Alex had a day off from school, so he decided to go do some work with his mother that day.  She’s a volunteer with many other people that are parts of various animal rescue organizations.  They’ve all come together, and are working at a warehouse that’s been turned into a makeshift shelter for animals that were a part of a terrible hoarding case.

There were more than 140 animals taken from the property in question.  They were in various states of poor health, almost all of them had never known life outside of a cage, and many of them were small Chihuahuas and dachshunds.

“Most of them had only had little or no human contact,” said Valinda.  “They were so scared. They would tremble and cower if we tried to pet them.”

That’s where Alex first met Trouble.  Trouble was a bundle of fear at first, but for whatever reason, Alex was drawn straight to him cage.  He did spend a bit of time walking around and talking to the other dogs, but as his mother explains it, Trouble was, “The One.”

“He held him, played with him and, probably for the first time in this dog’s life, he felt loved,” said Valinda.  “He fell asleep while Alex was holding him.”

His mother’s heart was overflowing with joy.  Her 16-year-old son is just a big softy when it comes to the animals, but what’s even more, he seemed to know that this particular dog was really in need of some love and attention.

“My wonderful 16-year-old son has a giant soft spot in his heart for the animals that are ‘less desirable,’” she said.  “He has asked me several times this evening about Trouble.  After he gets home from school tomorrow, we’re going back to the temporary warehouse where the remainder of the dogs are.  I hope Trouble got adopted, but if not, I’m sure we will be bringing him home, if only as a foster.”

The dogs were buried below the debris for a total of four days.  Locals likely heard them crying after a couple of days and called emergency services.  It took an additional two days to get close enough to reach them.

The dogs reportedly belonged to an elderly woman who was hospitalized when her house was torn down, and it’s not clear if she knew the destruction would be taking place or if she knows about the condition of her animals.  All the dogs are now being cared for by an animal welfare group, and will hopefully have a new home to go to.

TAF spent last night at the ER vet after being called about a puppy that needed emergency medical attention. Before Ivy was caught, a man was seen running after her with a 2×4. One can only imagine what her life has been like in the short 8 months that she has been alive.

Once at the ER, it was determined that Ivy once had a collar/electrical cord wrapped so tightly around her neck that it actually bore through her skin. This form of torture happened slowly and painfully over an extended period of time. The back of Ivy’s neck is scabbed over but the impression of the collar remains. Ivy’s throat is another story… it bears a large open slit, is swollen and pus drips from it. Infection has already set in and she has a high fever.

Ivy remains hospitalized at the ER Vet and has undergone sedation to have her neck shaved and the dead/rotting tissue cut away from her infected neck wound. We will know later on today the direction that her medical team choses to go in her recovery. Having a drain placed in her neck is a real possibility if her wound is not properly draining. Our main focus is keeping Ivy’s infection from spreading and the real threat of blood poisoning.

We will be visiting Ivy this afternoon and will keep you updated. Please keep Ivy in your thoughts and prayers.

Having this done will allow a complete recovery in 10-14 days. As you can imagine, after enduring such abuse, 8-month-old Ivy is having some trust issues. Because of this, we are going to work on some emotional rehabilitation so she is not set up for failure.

The two of them played all afternoon and then hung out in the office while we worked on paperwork.

Ivy is crate trained and understands the idea that outside is the best place to go potty. She is still very much a young puppy, so she is learning some basic commands and manners.

Ivy will have her sutures removed later this week. We are very optimistic that she will make a full recovery, physically and mentally!

Maggots have burrowed deeply into her face and tunneled through to her neck. However, since the fur on her neck is so badly matted, you cannot see the carnage that lies underneath. You can only see maggots pop out around the edges and through her ear. It is absolutely horrifying and smells of rotten meat. As maggots grow, they begin feeding on a dog’s skin and tissues. They eventually produce a special salivary enzyme that is capable of liquefying intact skin. As the maggots feed, this destructive salivary enzyme actually digests the dog’s skin, creating full-thickness, punched-out skin lesions (sores) within a matter of hours. The maggots move into these cavities. They continue feeding on exposed skin and enlarging the raw openings, creating a perfect environment for severe secondary bacterial skin infections. Some flies can secrete toxic substances into these wounds. If a dog becomes heavily infested with maggots, it can go into shock. In Antonia’s case, the maggots could have also already done irreparable damage to her sinus cavity, ear canals or even brain.

Since Antonia has such a high fever, she is being started on IV fluids immediately. Her medical team will have to do a full blood panel to see if she is stable enough to be put under to shave/cut off her matted fur with a scalpel… it is that hard. Pain medication and antibiotics will also be given through her IV. We won’t know anything more about her condition until her medical team can dig deeper and flush the maggots out. The abuse that this girl has endured is gut wrenching and makes absolutely no sense at all. The lack of morality in some neighborhoods in Chicago seems to progressively be getting worse. God help us all.

September 6^th:  TAF transferred Antonia over to our regular vet today. The poor girl is literally dying to scratch and rub her head and face to alleviate the itching, but then her ear is so painful and sore that she can’t lie her head down properly so she just sits and stares in misery. It’s really hard to see. TAF’s vet said she needed to sedate her and really scrub her head and neck clean as infection is already seeding the area, despite the antibiotics. (The brown and red marks on Antonia’s skin are a result of the maggots eating away at her skin.) She will also be looking more deeply/closely into Antonia’s ear (her right one) to figure out what is going on that is so very painful. We want Antonia to get some relief and comfort so she can rest and settle down to begin healing. It’s clear our girl has never had a good day in her life and it’s almost like she has post traumatic stress from the maggots crawling around her poor face, neck and ears. Antonia is now hospitalized.

September 8^th:  TAF visited Antonia at the hospital today. She clearly felt better because she was very happy to see us, vocalizing and jumping around. Her ear is much less raw and inflamed though she still tilts her head a bit to that side. Antonia is receiving medication and painkillers twice a day for her ears and has started to fight them less, which we hope is a sign the pain and inflammation are reducing inside the ear as well. Antonia’s head and neck are still very scabby and itchy from where the infection is. The vet staff is applying silver sulfadiazine cream to the raw areas. (Silver sulfadiazine works by stopping the growth of bacteria that may infect an open wound. This helps to decrease the risk of the bacteria spreading to surrounding skin, or to the blood where it can cause a serious blood infection (sepsis)). Antonia will be re-assessed tomorrow to determine the best course of action. We want to be sure her pain and discomfort is completely managed before moving her, and will do whatever it takes to make sure that is possible. Antonia’s medical team can more aggressive with her pain management, than we can, so we are leaving it up to them.

September 22^nd:  It has been a couple weeks since Antonia came to us with a maggot infestation on her face, head and neck.  But it was her severe earaches that would cause her excruciating pain. Even after two weeks on ear antibiotics, the infectious bacteria inside her right ear is still present. She is about to start her third round of antibiotic ear drops.

In addition to all of this, almost all of the scabs that covered Antonia’s neck, head and face have fallen off. Her new skin underneath is incredibly sensitive and she is very cautious when you put your hand near her head, face or neck… some of this is also a reaction to the neglect and abuse of her past.

Antonia has gone into heat so it is going to be awhile before she can spayed and ready for adoption. Until then, she will be hanging out with her therapy buddies Antler, Miller and Hazel Grace. As you can see in the photo, Antonia likes to sit with her foster mom Antler.

October 12^th:  After ER hospitalization and weeks of doctors’ appointments, Antonia went in to have her ears scoped yesterday. We are happy to announce that Antonia’s ears have fully healed and that she was able to be spayed.

As you can imagine, after such neglect, Antonia has been a little shy at times. She has been in a foster home and we have been working with her day and night to build up her confidence. She has made great strides and we are really looking forward to finding her a home that would cater to her needs.

October 20^th:  AFTER MANY WEEKS OF RECEIVING MEDICAL CARE, ANTONIA IS NOW READY FOR ADOPTION!

On September 2nd, Antonia was found behind a garbage can in a Chicago alley. Antonia’s face, head and neck were covered in maggots and they were eating away at her skin. As bad as this was, it was the excruciating pain of her raging ear infections that brought Antonia to her knees.  She has now received a clear bill of health and is ready for adoption.

Antonia is a 15-pound, 1-year-old shih tzu/poodle mix who loves to snuggle, hang out and sit on your lap. She is a low maintenance girl who is very friendly and loving, but can take a minute to warm up to people. Antonia would be best in a home where she can be the one and only, or with another very chilled out little dog. She just isn’t sure what to make of other dogs, but seems to enjoy their company. In addition, we believe it best that Antonia not go to a home with young children. As you can imagine, after such neglect, Antonia has been a little hand shy at times and we don’t want to set her up for failure.

He weighed only 19 pounds, little more than a third of what would be considered healthy.  A good Samaritan saved him from the streets, where he would have quickly perished, and brought him to Bossier City Animal Control.

“This poor guy who we’ve named Jude was left on a chain to starve. When he got close to death they cut him loose so they didn’t have to deal with disposing of the carcass,” they said on their Facebook page.  “Despite humans failing him in every way possible, he still wags his tail and gives kisses.”

Jude was taken to Benton Animal Hospital for treatment and recovery.  BCAC’s office manager and rescue coordinator Brittany Hardy said she sees many pit bulls come in in a similar state.

“They’re a great breed, but often used for income and no care for where they end up, and a lot of the time they end up here,” she told the Shreveport Times.

It has taken months of care, but Jude is finally beginning to look like a healthy and happy boy.  He still has a few more pounds to pack on, but one of the staff members recently told me that now he is “doing great.”

Three of the dogs lived in a flooded basement, and two in a backyard shed.  They were likely bored, lonely, and incredibly anxious, as they had no idea when their next meal was coming.

“They have no human contact and get fed when someone shows up, which is approximately three times per week,” Stacey Silverstein of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC told The Dodo.

Even though they obviously didn’t care much about the dogs, the owner didn’t want to give them up, but agreed to relinquish the heavily pregnant Pocahontas.  Soon after her rescue, she gave birth to 12 puppies, and 8 of them survived.  She has been a wonderful and attentive mom to them.

In the meantime, Rescue Dogs worked to save the other dogs.  They put their efforts into taking in Queenie, Pocahontas’ mom.

“We were able to remove Queen shortly thereafter and she went directly to our vet in Brooklyn where it was discovered that she was pregnant as well,” Silverstein said.

A week into foster care, Queenie gave birth to 13 puppies, with 12 surviving (6 boys and 6 girls).  Just like her daughter, she has also been a very devoted mother to her pups.

“Both dogs are amazing, loving, sweet, affectionate and gentle,” Silverstein said. “We have been unsuccessful to rescue the others but we are still trying.”

All the puppies are doing well in foster care.  When they are old enough, they will be available for adoption, and hopefully never know anything but love and happiness.

“Queen and her babies are doing well this morning… their sniffles appear to be better already after their second dose of antibiotics,” their foster mom told Rescue Dogs.  “Their new, taller whelping box is coming today, [and] not a moment too soon since Prince William is climbing OUT of the pool on his own already!”

That’s when Terri Sumpter and the Detroit Pit Crew were called in to help.  They came and got Gina out of there, and to a healthier and happier place.  She’s doing quite well with her recovery, and she will hopefully have a forever home very soon.

With nothing else to go on, it was easy to assume that this dog had dug into the grave to be closer to her deceased owner. What was really going on was that she was seeking out a den to stay warm.

Snow had recently fallen in Serbia, and it was crucial that she find a cozy home, because she had puppies to keep safe. It was very fortunate that local animal rescuer Vensa Mihajloski came across them, or they might not have survived.

She and a team of rescuers brought food to earn mama’s trust and give her some comfort. Vigilance and offspring-rearing is tiring work, and she was grateful to be rescued and have a safe, warm place to stay where she wouldn’t have to expend energy searching for food or water.

With Vensa and the team’s help, the adorable puppies were able to grow into strong, healthy dogs. Today they are all living in a lovely home, and mama can now rest easy for the remainder of her life.
