His goal is to live there around the clock until at least 300 animals get adopted or when 50,000 euros ($55,55) are raised for them. Gaillard will live stream the whole experience on Facebook. He even made a flyer for himself like the ones the shelter makes for all their residents.

When we see goodness in the world, we are often inspired to go good ourselves, which was exactly the case for another nameless patron, who put $2,000 into the office donation bin.  This will likely help save a number of pets in dire need of emergency medical care.

Slown could tell that Niya had been hurt by someone, she had a gash above her eye that looked like a mark from a tool.

The wound on Niya’s nose meant someone had used a can as a muzzle. Niya was too terrified to move at the shelter, her tail tucked tightly between her legs.

Once at Slown’s house, Niya hid in the corner and slept all night. Niya continued to sleep the following day and almost the entire night.

It was during that second night that Slown was awakened by warm breath on her hand.

It was Niya.

Slown said she immediately started to pet and talk to the dog. Niya sort of smiled and leaned in.

A few moments later, Niya returned to her bed. Niya still has a long road to recovery, she has whipworms and hookworms.

But Niya has come out of her shell a little bit more for Slown and her wife, Terri. Here Niya sort of smiles on her way back from the vet.

We all want so badly to believe that at some point, it will finally stop happening. But sadly, just when you think you’ve seen the worst of humanity, you run across even more horrific cruelty — like what happened to Sarah, a two-year-old English bulldog.

When Karissa Parran, the assistant manager of the Almost Home No-Kill Shelter in Michigan got to work one morning, she came across an awful sight that will bring tears to your eyes. Luckily for this pup, she couldn’t have fallen into better hands.

Sarah’s owner had stuffed her into a cat crate and she was crying in agony when Parran found her.

The crate on the right is the proper size for her 60-pound frame, but she was cruelly left inside the other tiny box and abandoned outside of the shelter.

When they were finally able to get her out of her prison, they were shocked by her injuries.

She couldn’t walk at all, and they realized she was completely paralyzed from the waist down.

This was because she had a herniated disc, which their veterinarian believes was caused from either being mercilessly beaten or being shoved into the crate.

When the staff reviewed their security footage, they were even more horrified to find that she had been left like that for 12 long hours.

This poor baby also lost the ability to use her bladder, so her medical team has to express it for her because she is too terrified of catheters.

Along with a lot of pain medications and treatments for her inflamed spine, the shelter workers are giving her as much love and comfort as possible.

And even after all the unimaginable pain she went through, this sweet girl showers her rescuers with kisses and cuddles.

Police are still looking for the person who did this, and while Sarah is getting the best care possible right now, she still needs your help.

The two-year-old dog was found wandering the streets with both of his eyes so badly damaged, they were propping out of his head.  He had been picked up by someone, and brought to emergency animal medical technicians with the Arizona Humane Society, and he was rushed into surgery.

They were able to save Ashton, but not his eye, leaving him blind.  One of the eyes, according to surgeons, had been damaged in that way for quite some time, and the other was a bit more recent.  No matter what, both had to be removed, which would make finding a forever home a bit more difficult.

Medical staff has been helping Ashton adapt to life as a blind dog, and his new forever family will have to have saint-like patience with him as he adapts, but his new family is confident that they can provide for him a great place to live, and all of the love and understanding that he’ll need to have a happy life.

Even though things did not at all start off well in life for Ashton, he is described as full of pep and life, and a very, very sweet dog.  His new family promises to do whatever they have to make Ashton’s life a really great one from here on out.

It must be a lonely life, even if there are volunteers who give you some love every now and then, the dogs must be craving for attention and affection.

So when this dog named Marshmallow was taken outside by a shelter volunteer, he didn’t want to go back to the shelter. He climbed onto the volunteer’s lap and fell asleep right there. He just wanted to be held that way forever.

The volunteer named Michele Kenno took Marshmallow for an outing outside the shelter. For a few hours, Marshmallow experienced the freedom and the attention and love that he desperately needed.

Marshmallow didn’t want the day to end. So when the time came when they have to return to the shelter, it seems like he wanted to let every bit of the moment last.

“We wanted to help our shy and fearful dogs without forcing physical interaction with them to see the positive effect that [the volunteers] could have on them,” program director Jo Klepacki told The Dodo.

Those hesitant hounds are the ones less likely to get adopted–people look them over if they’re cowering in a corner–so the kids are encouraged to read aloud to them in front of their kennels.

Oftentimes, the shy dogs relax and become curious, making their way closer to their reading buddies, who encourage the behavior with treats.

“Hearing a child reading can really calm those animals,” said Klepacki to The Dodo.

And the hyper dogs? Well, they tend to quiet down and listen to the storytellers, too!

Once the shelter pups associate humans with good things, they’re more likely to interact with potential adopters–and find their forever homes.

What’s more, children are able to improve their reading skills in front of the non-judgmental audience. They also receive invaluable life lessons about how to treat animals well,  learning that dogs have feelings, just like them.

“It’s encouraging children to develop empathy with animals…They’re seeing fearfulness in these animals, and seeing the positive effect they can have,” Klepacki told The Dodo.

The once-monthly program has been extremely popular with kids and canines alike. Though it was just launched last Christmas, Klepacki says that it’s already helped some dogs get adopted.

Eventually, the program coordinator hopes to bring Shelter Buddies to all Humane Society of Missouri locations, and to invite shelter cats in on the fun.

Imagine: if more kids were able to learn to connect and empathize with animals at a young age, it could potentially help in preventing future animal abuse.

The two organization work together to save Pit bulls from shelters and train them to become police dogs. Animal Farm Foundations covers the cost of the training while Universal K9 prepares the dogs to be outstanding citizens and K9 officers.

The program has successfully placed nine Pit bulls across different police departments and these four-legged officers have proved they can do the jobs as well as German shepherds or malinois can.

Kiah is one of the nine K9 detective Pit bulls in the nation and she works along side her partner, Officer Justin Bruzgul from the Boughkeepsie Police Department. She is patrol certified and also trained to track missing adults and children.

“It is nice to have her as my partner,” Bruzgul told LittleThings.com. “I know she will be there, she will have my back if I need her and she will do whatever I need her to do.”

Training shelter dogs to do police work is a cost-effective measure because police departments no longer spend excessive amounts of money buying their four-legged officers from breeders. Money is not the only thing this program saves, lives are saved too.

Of course, the idea is to always be working to find a forever home for these dogs.  Sometimes, it can take weeks for someone to come in and adopt one of them, and the anxiety of being cooped up in a cage can be very rough on the dogs.

“We’ve had dogs in the past that took up to six weeks to feel comfortable getting outside and then, they love to play, they love other dogs and they love me,” Mathis said.  “It doesn’t make me sad to see [dogs] broken and withdrawn because with time, I know what’s possible.”

Dr. Mathis recently shot a video with a new addition to the shelter called Graycie.  In the video, Dr. Mathis gets into the kennel with her and sits down for a meal.  He even eats from one of the dog bowls, just like little Graycie.

Graycie was brought into Granite Hills Animal Care on the 29^th of January.  A good Samaritan came across the adorable little pit bull mix on a dirt road.  She had been abandoned, and badly needed help.

“She was dumped in the middle of nowhere,” he said.  “She had a collar, so she was owned by somebody at some point.  Whoever was feeding her wasn’t feeding her enough.  She was 20 pounds when we found her and probably should have weighed 30 to 35 pounds.”

Graycie has been doing quite well since being brought to the shelter.  Dr. Mathis really wants her to know that no matter what she may have seen or been put through, not every single human is terrible, and love is possible.  She is slowly starting to gain trust, and little by little, is coming around.

“She’s still quite timid around me.  I’m spending time with her so she’s not scared of me.  I said (to Graycie), ‘I’m just going to sit here with you while you’re eating,’” Mathis said.  “By getting her out of her comfort zone a little bit we hope she’ll get used to people.”

A note at the end of the video made it clear who to contact to learn more about Rush and adopting him. With a viral hit, the shelter hoped to finally find Rush a forever home with a bed he could make each day after more than 30 days in the shelter.

After seeing the viral video on a newscast, the woman who ended up adopting Rush texted her husband immediately to tell him about the video and her desire to adopt Rush. She was surprised when her husband didn’t immediately text her back with reasons not to adopt. After losing a dog earlier in the year, he said he was finally ready to adopt a new furry family member.

On the way to the shelter to adopt Rush, the couple saw a Cincinnati Bengals football team billboard with the words “Rush be There” in large letters, although the husband notes the billboard actually read “Rush to be There.” The couple agreed that it was a sign that Rush was meant to join their family.

A second viral video shows an exuberant and elated Rush playing with his new owners. Hopefully, Rush continues to delight his new owners with his quirky behavior and making his bed each morning. While Rush’s viral video led to a happy ending, and he’s making a new life at his forever home, there are still many pets waiting in shelters and foster homes for their own forever homes. The separation was devastating for Joshua, but he knew it was for the best. “Every day I wake up without them snuggled up underneath my blankets is a strange day,” he said. “Every day I don’t have to walk a dog is a wrong day.”

Two months later, Josh was ready to take care of Panda and Momma again, but he needed help transferring them across the country. Enter an animal hero named Mariah, who volunteered to drive Joshua’s pups all the way from Louisiana to California. When Mariah picked the dogs up, it was clear the two months spent away from Dad were just as difficult for them as it was for him. Panda and Momma were barely eating. They were skinny and miserable.

In this video, Mariah arrives at local park in California and waits for Joshua to arrive. She isn’t sure how the meeting will go, and Joshua is worried that his dogs won’t remember him. But just wait until he gets out of his car…
