Dog Missing for a Decade Finally Reunited with Human

It was back in 2006 when Tracy Dove last saw her one-year-old dog Charlie. He disappeared from her yard one day, and up to now no one had seen him. Dove had given up finding him a while ago, figuring that by now he would have been dead. She could not have been more wrong.

Last week, completely out of the blue, Dove got a phone call from a vet clinic near the town of Brewton, Alabama. Someone had found Charlie, and when they scanned his chip, Dove’s information came up! There was no doubt about it, Charlie had been found, and would be coming home.

“I was shocked, overwhelmed. I cried,” Dove said in a news interview Thursday. “It’s amazing.”

No one is sure just where Charlie has been all this time. Ten years is a very long time for a dog to be on their own, but Charlie seems no worse for the wear. He’s a bit gray in the fur here and there and is in need of medical treatment for a minor issue, but he’ll be on his way home soon.

“It will be a lengthy road for him, but he’ll be home,” said Dove.

Dove was living in a different place back when Charlie first went missing. Charlie is of a breed that is commonly used as a hunting dog, and can be very expensive to adopt and train. Dove believes that someone took Charlie off of their property because of this.

“He’s an expensive hunting dog. We just kept him as a pet,” said Dove. “He was a spoiled rotten pet. I was shocked and at first I thought ‘This has got to be a scam’ because it’s been 10 years. They sent me a picture and I talked with them, and it’s my Charlie.”

Sheriff’s Deputies Save Elderly Dog Dying in a Frozen Creek

A partially deaf and blind dog in the beginning stages of dementia got confused and wandered away from his yard and nearly died. Thankfully, a neighbor and sheriff’s deputies found him, and saved him from a slow and painful death in an icy Michigan creek.

Janet Lane had been battling a cold and got up around 3 am last Friday to get a drink of water. She let out Rocky, her family’s 15-year-old adopted poodle mix. She waited for him to finish his business and come back inside as usual. But unlike every other time, Rocky didn’t come back in.

She grabbed a flashlight and went looking. He can barely climb the steps from the family room to the kitchen, and wasn’t in any state to be an adventurer. Nevertheless, the little dog had vanished. Lane could only imagine the worst, but was hopeful he’d return.

“Maybe he went off to die. We were waiting, hoping,” she told Detroit Free Press.

The family’s Orion Township home is in the midst of woods and wetlands, a dangerous place for impaired animals. Twice they checked the creek nearby, but there was no sign of him.

Nearly 19 hours later, a neighbor called the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office to report hearing an animal in distress – it was Rocky. Deputies found the little guy hypothermic and trapped in the very same creek bed.

By the time they reached him, it appeared as if it was too late. But a deputy performed chest compressions, and the neighbor supplied blankets to warm him up, and he was resuscitated. The Lanes were called after Rocky’s tag was checked for contact information.

“Oh my God. It was great,” Lane said of the phone call. “We had given up all hope. It’s definitely a great ending. Who wants to die out by themselves?”

She and her husband, Jim, wrapped him up in towels when they got him home, and gently blow-dried him. They tried to get him to drink water, and took him to a vet the next day. He is now home, and though standing up has been a challenge, he’s starting to toddle about and eat and drink again.

“He’s a tough old guy,” Lane said.

Dog Insistent on a Walk Leads Owner to Missing Elderly Woman

Rebecca Burley was about to go volunteer at an animal shelter on Tuesday when her dog, Roxanne, demanded to be taken for a walk. As fate would have it, an elderly woman had gone missing, and the sagacious dog led her human right to her!

The Virginia schoolteacher was on her way out the door to spend some time at the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter when rescue dog Roxanne begged for a walk.

“So we went out for a walk, right along our usual route around the neighborhood where we have been walking her since August,” Rebecca told 13 News Now.

But unlike every other day they go out, police were swarming around the area.

“One of the officers pulled up and asked if we have seen someone walking around in a nightgown, and I said ‘no,’ but assumed it was an elderly person.”

The pair continued along their stroll, but moments later, Roxanne dragged Rebecca over to a ditch.

“She pulled me towards a ditch, and there was a woman laying down in a nightgown, it turns out she was in some kind of distress,” Rebecca explained.

She flagged down officers to tell them they had found the woman, and paramedics were called. Rebecca doesn’t know who she is or how she’s doing now, and hopes family members will see the news stories and let her know.

Roxanne was once rescued, and now has paid the good deed forward. Rebecca hopes this will encourage others to adopt shelter dogs – someday they might save a life. This one was rewarded with an extra snack that day.

Dog & Girl Who Survived Siberian Wilderness Honored with Statue

Last year we shared with you the story of Karina and her dog Naida, who dutifully protected her when she spent nearly two weeks lost in the vast wilderness of Siberia. Naida only left the girl’s side to find people to come rescue them, and recently a statue was unveiled at the Yakutsk Airport dedicated to their perseverance.

On July 29^th, 2014, Rodion Chikitova embarked on a trip to his native village. Unbeknownst to him, his four-year-old daughter, Karina, followed him into the woods. Their puppy, Naida, accompanied her. Karina’s mother thought Rodion had brought her along, and it wasn’t until they spoke on the phone a few days later that their worst fears were realized.

Crews searched by air and land for five days with no trace of her. Some of the men on the ground were even forced to fend off a bear. Chances of finding the girl and pup alive in these conditions and 40-degree weather were becoming increasingly slim. But after nine days, the dog returned to the girl’s village of Olom.

“Two days before we found Karina her puppy came back home. That was the moment when our hearts sank, because we thought at least with her dog Karina had chances to survive – night in Yakutia are cold and some areas have already gone into minus temperatures,” explained Afanasiy Nikolayev, spokesman for the Sakha Republic Rescue Service.

“If she was to hug her puppy, we thought, this would have given her a chance to stay warm during nights and survive. So when her dog came back we thought ‘that’s it’ – even if she was alive – and chances were slim – now she would have definitely have lost all hopes. Our hearts truly and deeply sank.”

But the dog didn’t just return – he came to get people to find her. He led rescuers exactly to her. Karina had been hiding out in some tall grass, which is why she couldn’t be spotted from above.

“Suddenly with the dog’s help we saw Karina siting in the grass. We rushed to her, got her a little tea and grabbed her to run back to the car and doctors,” Nikolayev said. “I carried Karina myself to the car, and she was light as a bird. She weighed hardly 10 kilograms (22 pounds) – but amazingly she was fully conscious.”

Miraculously, the scantily-clad girl only suffered from mosquito bites and a few scratches to her feet. She told rescuers how she survived by eating berries and drinking water from streams.

“Certainly she went with grandmother and parents to the forest, to gather berries. Perhaps this is why she was not afraid of the forest,” said rescuer Albert Semyonov. “Karina herself is a very strong girl, has a strong-willed character. This probably helped her to survive.”

Karina’s grandmother, Emma, said that Karina’s first words to Naida when she returned were “Why did you leave me?” But because of this wonderful dog, she survived and was found before anything bad could happen. She made a complete recovery, and was for the most part unfazed by their sojourn.

Nikolay Chochchasov was inspired by the pair’s stoutheartedness, and created a bronze sculpture in their likenesses. Karina recently celebrated her sixth birthday, around the same time the effigy was revealed by Yakutsk Airport’s general director, Nikolay Mestnikov.

Dog & Pig BFFs Found Wandering Together

It is not unusual to see a stray dog wandering around a neighborhood – this happens every day. But a pig, now that’s a different story. On Wednesday, a dog and a pig were spotted sauntering down a Florida road together. They have since been reunited with their owner.

Wednesday morning, volunteers with the Lost and Found Pets of Hillsborough County got a call about the unlikely duo meandering around Merrily Circle in Seffner.

When the rescuers tried to put the dog inside a truck, the pig began screaming. It appeared that he did not want to be separated from his pal.

Owner Willie Landry came forward to claim them. He said K 2 and Petey the pig grew up together, and escaped through a fence the day before.

Apparently Petey thinks he’s just one of the dogs. There was a third dog back at home who was very morose without his other thirds.

This Scared Dog Was Found Crying On The Street. Now See His Journey To Recovery

When Dr. Karri found an abandoned dog named Benji on the streets, she realized that he had clearly been on his own for far too long. The poor pooch was left abandoned with matted fur, terrible teeth, and no will to live.

Luckily, when the kind doctor brought Benji to her care center, she quickly set him on the right path to a full recovery, giving him a second chance at life in the process. Seeing Benji now with a more positive outlook on life makes the fact that he was dying on his own even more confounding.

You better grab a whole box of tissues. You’re going to need them all.

Seeing the smile glowing from Benji’s heart is enough to make my day. Thanks to Dr. Karri, he finally gets to go to his forever home today.

Community Helps Find Airman’s Lost Dog After Relocating from Abroad

Lola and her fur sibling Lexi lived in Okinawa, Japan, with her adoptive family the McKnights, but when the family relocated back to the United States Lola went missing. Thanks to a community of animal lovers, the lost dog spent just a few nights alone in her new homeland.

Senior Airman Rob McKnight doesn’t know how to thank the community of strangers that came together to find and rescue his beloved pet Lola. McKnight adopted the dog while he was stationed in Japan with his family, and this June the family moved back to Wisconsin.

Lola and Lexi made the trip to their new home on June 9, 2015, they were staying with McKnight’s parents in Colgate, Wis., but two days after arriving Lola went missing.

The Air Force mechanic couldn’t imagine coming to his new home and not have his pet there to greet him, and when animal lovers from Colgate heard the pet was lost they came together to help the McKnights and local authorities find Lola. On June 16, 2015, just five nights after disappearing, Lola was found.

“It was a hot dog and a loop leash. That’s all it took,” McKnight told Fox 6 Now.

Volunteers covered hundreds of miles searching for the lost dog and when spotted, the pet was lured with a tasty hot dog.

“You know, you don’t come across animal lovers like that very often — that are just willing to drop everything and go out and help a single family and we are very blessed to have that,” said McKnight’s wife, Alissa.

Lola lost a few pounds and had injured her paws while on the run, but with some TLC and lots of food she is expected to make a full recovery.

He Chipped Away At A Pipe Not Knowing What To Expect – I Was In Tears By The End

This rescue is hard to watch, but once you get to the end of it, it’s entirely worth it.

When a man in Portugal heard faint cries coming from deep underground, he set to work finding the source of the wails. After slowly and carefully chipping away at an old pipe, he first found a dog that sadly didn’t survive the elements…but what he found as he kept digging had me holding my breath until the very end.

It’s amazing that this pup didn’t just give up after being stuck underground in the dark like that for who knows how long. While it’s still unclear just how these dogs got themselves into this extremely unfortunate situation, the tail-wagging at the end of the story had me cheering!

Homeless Dog Who Lost Nose to Receive Implant

A street dog whose nose got caught in a trap will hopefully be able to smell again thanks to a doctor who designed an implant that will be embedded into his snout. In even better news, the dog has also found a forever home.

Parys, who is from Bialystok, Poland, will undergo surgery tomorrow, according to the Daily Mail.

Dr. Marcin Elgal of the Individual Medical Implants Technopark designed the tube-shaped implant after he learned of the dog’s misfortune. It is believed that the implant will restore Parys’ sense of smell, and will help surgeons reconstruct the shape of his nose, which was completely torn off in a snare.

Dogs have an olfactory bulb that is three times larger than humans. We have phenomenal vision, but dogs have us beat in scent detection. We only have about 6 million scent receptors, but dogs have between 125 million and 250 million receptors, except bloodhounds, who have closer to 300 million.

The mucus on a dog’s nose (rhinarium) helps capture scent particles and determines air current direction. Dogs sniff each other’s rears to gather the same information we do on each other’s Facebook pages – sex, age, diet, overall health, and emotional state, so the ability to smell is very important to a dog.

After his surgery, Parys will be recovering at home with his new mom, Magdalena Smosarska.

Climber Rescuers Help Lost Dog Get Back Home

On March 15, 2015, a group of mountain climbers rescued a dog that had been lost for five days in the Curavacas mountains of Spain.

Tente Lagunilla, and avid climber and mountain rescuer, learned about the lost dog when a friend contacted him to say that on Saturday he had heard a dog barking near the mountain’s summit but was unable to locate the dog. When Lagunilla’s friend descended the mountain he went into town and inquired about the lost a pet. The man found the dog’s owner and learned the dog had been missing since Tuesday, March 10th.

The following day Lagunilla organized a rescue mission, and with a team of seasoned climbers they headed into the mountains. Bad weather made the rescue risky, but after hours hiking through snow and ice, the rescue team came upon the tired, hungry and lost dog.

Lagunilla secured the dog to a leash, fed him and then continued the trek to the summit. It was necessary to go all to the top in order to access a safe road and trek back down to town.

Once rescuer descended, the dog was reunited with his thankful owner. The pet is now comfortably resting at home.

Husky Pup Is Lost In Belly-Rubbin’ Bliss

What a life this puppy lives! You know, it’s pretty tough to be adorable all the time!
One thing is for sure, this cutie LOVES belly rubs! (Of course! Which puppy doesn’t!?) As the man in the video says, he could do this for hours! We definitely don’t doubt that!!
With this tiny eyes closed, lying sprawled out on his back, someone gives his belly a little rub. And I’m no vet, but I can assure you that this pup has healthy working back legs… ‘Cause as soon as the belly rubs start, he’s kicking and wiggling those legs in delight!

Confession: If he really did do this all day… I’m pretty sure I’d happily watch it the entire time! There’s something so irresistible about a little wiggly pup!
