The project is run through the Arizona Humane Society (AHS), and was started in part thanks to a $50,000 donation from PetSmart Charities. They just wanted to make sure than families with dogs called into work for the military can rest easy knowing that their dog is well cared for, and has a safe place to be.

The program operates free of charge for enlisted service men and women. AHS found a foster family for Layla, the Locke family’s four-year-old pit bull. She was taken in by Larry and Janet LeBlanc from Surprise, Arizona. They fostered her the entire time that her human dad, Master Sergeant Doug Locke was deployed to South Korea.

Larry and Janet took care of Layla as if she was one of their own. It may have been a bit difficult to say good by to the dog they cared for the past 15 months, but they were happy to know that Layla would be going back to her rightful family, and that they were able to give back to a serviceman’s family.

“I think our faces tell [the story],” said Janet in the video. “But we’re not sorry that we did it. Not at all. It’s just a different bond. And you know, we’ll have a bond with them for the rest of our lives now.”

Back in 2015, the family’s house was hit by a missile during some fighting that broke out in the heavily contested area. They had to flee, and in a hurry. They just weren’t going to be allowed to bring Fox with them. They packed up what little was left and were off to Montreal, Quebec. When there, the young son in the family wrote to SPCA International to tell them about Fox, and see if there was any way they could help.

He sent the following in an email:

“I left Syria urgently with my mom and my brother, but we left our lovely dog, Fox, in Aleppo, Syria. We left him with our dad in a very dangerous area named Syrian El-Jadideh. Please help us bring our Fox [to Montreal]. Mom [is] always crying. She is extremely worried about Fox.”

The amazing people at SPCA International were able to find Fox, believe it or not, not far from where the family home was.  Once they were sure that they actually had him, the long and arduous journey home began.  It would be a very difficult trip out of Syria to Damascus, Turkey.  Once there, he took a car to Lebanon, and then finally to Germany.  Fox was put on a plane from there to Canada, where he was reunited with his family.

Last week, completely out of the blue, Dove got a phone call from a vet clinic near the town of Brewton, Alabama.  Someone had found Charlie, and when they scanned his chip, Dove’s information came up!  There was no doubt about it, Charlie had been found, and would be coming home.

“I was shocked, overwhelmed. I cried,” Dove said in a news interview Thursday.  “It’s amazing.”

No one is sure just where Charlie has been all this time.  Ten years is a very long time for a dog to be on their own, but Charlie seems no worse for the wear.  He’s a bit gray in the fur here and there and is in need of medical treatment for a minor issue, but he’ll be on his way home soon.

“It will be a lengthy road for him, but he’ll be home,” said Dove.

Dove was living in a different place back when Charlie first went missing.  Charlie is of a breed that is commonly used as a hunting dog, and can be very expensive to adopt and train.  Dove believes that someone took Charlie off of their property because of this.

“He’s an expensive hunting dog.  We just kept him as a pet,” said Dove.  “He was a spoiled rotten pet.  I was shocked and at first I thought ‘This has got to be a scam’ because it’s been 10 years.  They sent me a picture and I talked with them, and it’s my Charlie.”

Galliher served seven years in the Marines, and multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan. The pair were traveling through Utah, headed home to Washington after attending Marine promotion and retirement ceremonies at Camp Pendleton, when Raider slipped out the door of their motel room.

Heartbroken, the Marine searched throughout the night to no avail. And although he’d walked around the building of the nearby veterinary office next door numerous times, he didn’t think to knock on its door.

Raider hadn’t gotten very far; staffers there had picked him up pretty quickly.

Early the next day, employees at the Midvale office were able to reunite Galliher and his beloved German shepherd. The scene was touching and tearful.

“I got Raider when I felt like I felt like I was in a dark cave and there was no chance of seeing the light again and getting him was like having a little glint of hope,” he told Salt Lake City’s KSTU.

“Having him with me side-by-side makes me more confident, strong, and more like the sergeant in the Marines I once was.”

Shortly before Christmas, a little boy’s beloved dog, Kase, went missing.  He and his family searched the neighborhood for him, but couldn’t find him.  Recently his mom did, and the reunion he has with Kase will completely melt your heart.

Paula Williams of Lubbock, Texas, was devastated for her son, who was dearly missing his dog.  About a month later, she saw Kase at a neighbor’s home.  She asked them to give him back, and discovered that they had been caring for him since he had gotten loose.

“He was found right down the street from our house. A nice family had taken him in and kept him warm and fed,” she said on Facebook.

When Paula arrived to pick up her son from his grandma’s house, she had the best surprise ever.

He had a canine companion with him while he was fighting, and as time went on, the pair grew to be inseparable. It’s great to know that Ikar now gets to spend the rest of his life in a loving home with his best friend. This amazing reunion makes it clear that McFarland needs his four-legged pal just as much as the pup needs his soldier, and that’s a beautiful thing.
