For the past month, Lucas and the group of mushers have been helping out elderly residents in various towns by delivering their groceries so they could stay at home and not risk being exposed to Covid-19.

On average, Lucas and her 12 dogs travel 50 to 75 miles and take between four to six deliveries every single day.

The teams consist of six dogs each, and they’re enjoying being out and about. Whenever they see Lucas walking toward them with the groceries in hand, they wag their tails and get extremely excited to make their next delivery.

Lucas’ genius idea began when she noticed how many elderly customers had been coming into the Circle K convenience store that she works at.

She noticed that they were buying little things like milk or fruit, so she decided to come up with a way to help them out so that they wouldn’t have to go to the stores all the time just for small things.

Not only does Lucas deliver groceries, but she also picks up their prescriptions at Walgreens and other drug stores as well.

All of the recipients have been extremely appreciative and grateful for Lucas and her dogs’ generosity.

Police say 30-year-old Ashten Goeckel beat her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dog on her apartment’s balcony as the animal struggles over and over. Thanks to video surveillance footage in the area, Goeckel was arrested and a court date is pending. Since the arrest, people have been flooding the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office with requests for an update on the dog. She suffered a minor injury but is doing much better now.

“Sheriff Conway was receiving emails from people who were just concerned about the welfare of the dog and Sheriff Conway just wanted to see how she was doing. Through that – he made the offer to the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter to foster her here at the Gwinnett County Jail Dogs Unit,” according to Public Information Officer Deputy Shannon Volkodav.

Instead of the dog languishing in an animal shelter for her alleged abuser’s court date, she will live with inmates at the Gwinnett County Jail. Thanks to the agency’s Operation Second Chance Program, homeless animals are trained while they wait to get adopted out. The dog, named Victoria, will stay in the program until Goeckel’s case is settled. A judge is in charge of deciding where Victoria will go next.

In the video, Lyla is having fun outside in the yard, doing her thing sniffing around. Mark goes out to the yard where he sits down in a chair.

Even though she’s blind and deaf, it doesn’t take her long to sense his presence outside. Using her nose, she catches a whiff of his scent. Immediately, she perks up. She follows her nose to where he is sitting only to then shower him in all the doggie love that she has in her heart. It is truly touching to watch.

Joseph’s Legacy, an animal rescue charity in southwestern Ohio, says one of its dogs, Evie, was found dead at Warren Correctional Institution late last month. The sweet 4-year-old German Shepherd-Elkhound mix died of “blunt force trauma to her abdomen.”

Evie came to the rescue in 2015 when she was found with a broken hip after being hit by a car and nursing her puppies on the streets.

“She loved everyone she ever met,” the rescue said of Evie. “She was adopted and returned at no fault of her own a few months ago, her family was heartbroken. Evie settled back in but we found out that she had learned some escape tricks along the way. Evie could open doors or easily escape when she wanted to. She was doing amazing with her foster mom but we had thought maybe trying to get some more training, it would be safer for when she was adopted again…”

But Evie’s second chance was cut short by a violent attack.

“We got the news that Evie was found in the cell, unresponsive by her handlers and she had passed away. Naturally, this immediately became something we took seriously. We are deeply hurt by any loss but since we weren’t there, we needed to get a necropsy to find out how she passed away.”

When they received the results they were heartbroken. “Our Evie died from blunt force trauma to her abdomen causing her liver to hemorrhage and her kidney was also damaged. We’re all undeniably angered and overwhelmingly upset. We will have more results in about 3-4 weeks. We have to get justice for Evie.”

As result of the incident, Joseph’s Legacy has pulled all their dogs from the foster program and “will not return”.

The rescue posted the full story on their Facebook page and said that the state authorities are in charge of the investigation.

“Formal charges WILL be pressed. We have to make sure her story is known. These programs are more risky than we had originally thought. Please use our Evie as an example to think twice if you are in a rescue considering these types of programs. We know it’s not everywhere but please keep Evie in mind.”

Presently, it is not known why or how Evie was attacked.

Joseph’s Legacy adoption coordinator Judy Reinhart said they does not want to blame the prison staff or criticize other programs that involve animal-assisted inmate rehabilitation, but the rescue would not be returning. Joseph’s Legacy has pulled all their dogs from the foster program and “will not return”. They hope the correctional institution learns from Evie’s death and makes changes.

“It’s heartbreaking that this one or two individuals, whatever person or persons were involved, could ruin such a good thing for the dogs and the prison inmates as well,” she said.

A spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said the agency has “zero tolerance” for animal abuse and an investigation is underway.

Guy, of course, hit something of a lottery, becoming canine royalty over the weekend when his owner, Meghan Markle, said her “I dos” with Prince Harry. It’s been a long journey for the American dog, who originally hails from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Mt. Sterling, KY.

Many volunteers helped guy on his journey northward, where Markle eventually met him at an adoption event. She was looking for a companion for her other dog, Bogart. She took them on a walk together and the rest is (now part of royal) history!

Guy’s original shelter is a low-kill facility that euthanizes only as a last resort. It works closely with rescues to send dogs to places where they can get adopted, said shelter director J’Rie Elliot.

“(Markle) could have any dog she wanted. … And she opened her heart and home to a shelter pet. That makes all the long hours, sleepless nights and transports worth it.”

Elliot, who was just a shelter volunteer at the time, doesn’t remember Guy personally, but her predecessor, who has since retired, recalled him as a sweet little dog, she said.

“Our motto, ‘adopt don’t shop,’ has been heard on such a high level,” Elliot said. “She could have any dog she wanted. She can afford to buy any breed. And she opened her heart and home to a shelter pet. That makes all the long hours, sleepless nights and transports worth it.”

The marriage makes Markle the Duchess of Sussex. No word on Guy’s new title.

When Metallica was scheduled to hold a concert on November 1st in Bogota, Colombia, a fan group called Lords Of Hardwire were able to contact the band about a devastating problem: starvation.

According to blabbermouth.net, almost 5,000 children of the local Wayuú community have tragically died of starvation in the past 8 years. Additionally, an uncountable number of abandoned and stray animals suffer the same fate. So when Metallica asked concert-goers to bring non-perishable food items to donate, around 25,000 fans gathered more than 9 tons of food!

Some of that food was donated to Corazones Peluditos, or “Furry Hearts,” a Columbia rescue consisting of 40 families that work to care for, foster, and find forever homes for abandoned pets.

Imagine the kindness of these people, who despite being surrounded by poverty, still give so much of themselves to help these poor animals in need!

His master was suicidal, and under the influence of alcohol had fallen asleep on the railway track in the city of Karaganda in Kazakhstan. The dog, sensing the severity of the danger, put in his best efforts to get the man off the track. He pushed, pulled, nudged, and did all that he could if he were a super dog. And yes, he was. Because in his efforts, he was successful. But the timing was a bitch. The train driver saw the dog on the track and applied the emergency break. Even so, his hind paws got under the wheel, and he died, right on the spot, as one of the world’s most selfless being to have ever lived.

2. ‘Capitán’ defies to leave his master’s side, who passed away 9 years ago

The death of a Miguel Guzmán of Argentina in 2006 evidently hit his loyal dog the most. On learning about his master’s death, Capitán ran away from his home. And when the rest of the family started to search for the dog, they were startled to see Capitán guarding the grave of Guzmán. He had located the cemetery on his own! And as of 2015, Capitán continues to stay by his master’s side.

3. ‘Fido’ waited for his deceased master’s return in vain for 14 years

This Italian street dog garnered wide public attention for his demonstration of unwavering devotion and loyalty for his deceased master. On December 30, 1943, during the Second World War, Borgo San Lorenzo was subjected to a violent air raid. The same evening, Fido, as usual, went to the bus-stop awaiting his master’s arrival from work. On not spotting the master get off the bus, Fido went back home disheartened. But, his hopes did not die out because from that day on, he visited the bus-stop every day for 14 years hoping to see the man he had been missing terribly. In the 14th year, on June 9, 1958, Fido died at the bus-stop while still waiting for his master.

4. ‘Hachikō’ went to railway station for 9 years, carrying the unwavering hope of seeing his master again

Sharing a story somewhat similar to that of Fido, Hachikō was the name of one of the most faithful dogs to have ever lived. It was a daily routine of Hachikō to greet his master nearby Shibuya station. One tragic day, though, Hachikō’s master died of cerebral haemorrhage, thus never making it back to Shibuya station. Hachikō however, continued to show up at the station for next 9 years, 9 months, and 15 days, apparently at precisely right time when the train, which his master used to get off from, was due to arrive at the station. The initial reaction of the commuters and the workers at the station towards Hachikō was not very friendly, but following the publication of an article on him in Japan’s national newspaper, Asahi Shimbun on October 4, 1932, people started showing concern for the dog. They started feeding him to keep him nourished.

On March 8, 1935, Hachiko was spotted dead on a Shibuya street. And the cause of his death was diagnosed to be terminal cancer and a filaria infection.

5. ‘Waghya’, Chatrapati Shivaji’s loyal pet dog who is believed to have jumped into the funeral pyre of the Indian warrior king

Waghya was deeply shaken up because of the death of his master, Chatrapati Shivaji. So much so, that he jumped into the funeral pyre, thus immolating himself, and becoming the symbol of purity and loyalty in India. There is also a statue of Waghya erected beside Shivaji’s tomb at Raigad Fort in Maharashtra. Although, we are not sure whether this story was of an actual dog or a fictional dog.

6. ‘Tommy’ (apparently also known as Ciccio) visited the church where the funeral of his owner was held, daily.

Tommy used to visit Santa Maria Assunta church in Italy with his owner, Margherita Lochi. After Margherita passed away, Tommy followed her coffin and was present at her funeral. From then on, Tommy regularly made visits to the church and sat by the altar, silently. In the appreciation of the loyal dog, the father of the church was once quoted as saying, “he waits patiently by the side of the altar and just sits there quietly. I didn’t have the heart to throw him out—I’ve just recently lost my own dog, so I leave him there until Mass finishes and then I let him out.” After battling an illness, Tommy died on January 20, 2014.

7. For 23 days, ‘Talero’ guarded the dead body of his owner, who collapsed in a snow storm.

Bernardo Leónidas Quirós died in a snow storm in Argentina and his dog Talero took the charge of keeping his owner protected for days after he passed away. According to a Chilean online newspaper El Patagonico, Talero even seems to have warded off wild animals from attacking his deceased master, and for his own survival in the snow, he hunted small animals. In the cooler nights, he slept beside his master, with the intention of keeping him warm and sheltered from the harsh winds. And when police approached to rescue the body, he barked in frantic as if sensing danger for his master or, asking the authority to leave him alone with his master. A feeling that he himself knew best

8. ‘Bobbie the Wonder Dog’ travelled 4,105 km to return to his family home

Bobbie was accidentally separated from his family, while they were on a road trip in Indiana, in the year 1923. After carrying out an extensive and exhaustive search for their beloved dog, the family reached their home in Oregon, disappointed and sad.

6 months later, Bobbie appeared. He was there at the doorstep of his family home, gotten all scrawny and bony from the long walk that he set all the way from Indiana to his home in Oregon. On his journey back, he precisely scaled a distance of 4, 105 km, crossing through all the physical hurdles of mountains, deserts, and plains falling in between. On an average, Bobbie must have travelled about 23 km each day.

9. ‘Baekgu’ travelled 300 km to return to his owner who had sold him to someone else

It wasn’t long before the pup’s sight returned. His scabs began to fall off, and his fur grew back. Recovering at Dr. Matt’s home, he regained his appetite and became comfortable around humans, as well as the family dog.

A few months later, not only is Rem completely healed, but he has a wonderfully outgoing personality. Playful, friendly, and full of love, this dog no longer cowers when he makes new friends–he just wanted to cuddle with them!

Since his health has been restored inside and out, Rem is now ready to find his forever family!

According to ABC 27 News, SPCA director Susan Martin said, “it cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the breeder intended to harm the puppy or willingly neglected to care for him.”

Before she was unscrupulously murdered by the man who fatally shot himself after being tackled by Grimmie’s brother, she was championing for animal rights and appealing to the public for donations to the Humane Society of the United States. She was competing in the Charity Champions League on behalf of the HSUS.

On Saturday, the day Grimmie lost her battle to survive, the HSUS issued a statement regarding her senseless slaying:

“The entire universe at The Humane Society of the United States is grieving today with the family of the beloved Christina Grimmie. She didn’t just possess a beautiful voice – she was a beautiful soul who used her talents to spread a message that we humans should not mete out violence to animals. We will carry her message forward, despite the pain we feel.” – Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO

But before she was in the spotlight for animal advocacy, the singer warmed hearts by tweeting photos of her beloved dog, Chloe, whom she tweeted about missing while she was on the road touring. Chloe is undoubtedly confused about why her mom hasn’t come home, and will surely be pining for her.

The pair met at a shelter, and became fast friends. Now Hilda helps the sight impaired Herbie get around, and they are just so cute together! Shelter staff worried however. What if the two couldn’t be adopted out together? How would Herbie get around then?

As luck would have it they don’t have to separate. They were adopted out together, and will be able to live as a match made in heaven, happily ever after. Don’t they look so happy to be with their new forever family?
