Bama is a 10-year-old Lab. He is nearly blind, but his owner loves him all the same. Bama is used to wandering around his neighborhood, unattended, to visit neighbors. His owner lets him. Usually, he doesn’t get into much trouble — but this time, he fell 40 feet into an uncovered well.

One of the neighbors was working on the well when Bama accidentally slipped inside. He didn’t even see the hole in the ground. But luckily, the dog was alive after the fall.

Now, it was up to rescuers to get him out unharmed. Firefighters and animal control arrived to the scene and spent three hours trying to get him out…

The poor pup likely didn’t see where he was going.

Firefighters and rescue crews arrived on the scene, and spent three hours trying to get Bama to safety above ground.

It was a tricky matter: Oxygen levels inside the well had to be regulated constantly, and getting the ropes around the elderly dog wasn’t easy.

But eventually, Bama was lifted out of the hole, and went home safe and sound. The first thing his owner did? Gave him a hug!

“I grew up with a lot of pets,” Steve told The Dodo.  “Both my parents were animal lovers and they pretty much always let me have whatever I wanted as long as I could take care of it.”

So he’s always had a handful of dogs, but the death of one in particular really struck him hard.

“I was just so distraught about [that death],” he said. “A month or two went by and I still felt so horrible about it. I decided that the only way I would feel better was if something good happened that probably wouldn’t have happened if he had not died.”

He decided to go to the shelter and adopt the dog that was the least likely to ever have anyone give it a home before it died.

“So [I adopted] a 12-year-old Chihuahua [named Eeyore] with a heart murmur and four bad knees and I brought him home and that was just the beginning of all the animals.”

Every day Steve gets up at 5 am to prepare breakfast for each animal. They all have unique diets and some take medication, so they require individual care. He goes to work, but returns at lunch to give them treats. On the weekends, they are busy with grooming and vet appointments.

Despite it being like a canine convalescent home, life is never boring in this house. In addition to the dogs, over the years he has had cats, ducks, pigeons, chickens, a rabbit, a pig, and a pond full of koi. The pig, Bikini, is best friends with Irish wolfhound, Enoch. And his chicken, Oprah, loves to ride the Roomba around the house.

“[The] rabbit, someone just left him in my front yard is how I came to get him. I assume someone knew I had lots of animals and thought ‘Yeah, he’ll give him a good home.’ So, I found him in my front yard one morning and I put him in the chicken coop because I wasn’t sure what to do with him.”

It was all just meant to be. Bikini was raised around dogs, and Stuart (the bunny) is fearless and gets along with everyone. Of course, it probably helps that all the dogs are old and spend most of their time snoozing.

“They’re just wiser animals,” he explained. “You kind of know what you want out of life once you become a certain age. These dogs know who they are and it’s easy to develop a relationship with a person or pet who knows who they are.”

Steve says he’d never be able to live this way with this many puppies. The seniors are all low-energy, and make like very chill and rewarding.

“Like right now, I’m outside on my patio and it’s a beautiful day. Bikini’s laying in the yard and the dogs are all laying around the yard. They just makes it feel like home. It’s just fulfilling knowing that these guys are happy and loved and well-taken care of. It makes my days worthwhile.”

Heidi is a 14-year-old Jack Russell terrier. She’s also blind and deaf, and she needs constant attention. Her loving owner, Mike, says that she’s very feeble. So when she disappeared on a walk one day, he was convinced that she was as good as dead.

He takes her on daily walks on a trail, where he takes her leash off to let her wander and sniff around. He keeps a close eye on her, even if he knows that she wouldn’t get very far. But somehow this time, she managed to slip away from him, and into the shrubbery of the hillside. Mike says that it only took three minutes for her to disappear, and after he searched for days with no result, he knew she was dead.

But 14 days after her disappearance, Mike received a phone call that he says nearly “gave him a heart attack.” Some crews were working on the highway when they found the pup — miraculously alive — where they were supposed to dig, a full mile away from where Mike had lost her. The elderly and disabled dog survived those 14 days with no food or water, and even a big storm in the area.

Now she’s happily reunited with her owner — and hopefully she won’t get lost again!

Until now.

On a recent episode of Pit Bulls and Parolees (a show about the Villalobos Rescue Center, a hybrid rehabilitation shelter that rescues Pit Bulls and provides a work program for parolees), Mouse was brought into the home of an elderly couple, and they are absolutely beside themselves with joy to begin sharing their lives with this friendly rescue pup.

And for Mouse, the long-awaited union is well deserved. Over ten years ago, the Pittie mix was found amidst the tragic aftermath of Katrina. She was holed up in an attic, though it wasn’t that of her owners; rescuers figured that she must have floated in through a window, when the flood waters were at their highest. Once the floods receded, she stayed in the space for shelter–for three weeks. It is a mystery as to how she survived that long without food or clean water.

But somehow, Mouse had an unshakable will to live. And good things come to those who wait–years later, she has finally found a home!

As you can tell from the video, there’s no doubt that Mouse has been paired with the perfect humans to love and care for her forever. The best part about this story is plain to see: as ecstatic as Mouse is to be rescued by this loving family, her new parents are just as thrilled to be rescued by her.

Rebecca Burley was about to go volunteer at an animal shelter on Tuesday when her dog, Roxanne, demanded to be taken for a walk. As fate would have it, an elderly woman had gone missing, and the sagacious dog led her human right to her!

The Virginia schoolteacher was on her way out the door to spend some time at the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter when rescue dog Roxanne begged for a walk.

“So we went out for a walk, right along our usual route around the neighborhood where we have been walking her since August,” Rebecca told 13 News Now.

But unlike every other day they go out, police were swarming around the area.

“One of the officers pulled up and asked if we have seen someone walking around in a nightgown, and I said ‘no,’ but assumed it was an elderly person.”

The pair continued along their stroll, but moments later, Roxanne dragged Rebecca over to a ditch.

“She pulled me towards a ditch, and there was a woman laying down in a nightgown, it turns out she was in some kind of distress,” Rebecca explained.

She flagged down officers to tell them they had found the woman, and paramedics were called. Rebecca doesn’t know who she is or how she’s doing now, and hopes family members will see the news stories and let her know.

Roxanne was once rescued, and now has paid the good deed forward. Rebecca hopes this will encourage others to adopt shelter dogs – someday they might save a life. This one was rewarded with an extra snack that day.

Rocky the playful terrier showed up at Coleman’s doorstep accompanied by more than 10 police officers. After Coleman’s dog was brutally attacked and killed, the officers wanted to do something nice for the senior woman. They visited the Cleveland Animal Protective League (APL) and adopted the small breed pet.

The adoption cost, as well as microchip, food, bedding and toys were paid for by the fellow officers.

Coleman said the officers did not have to replace her pet but she is more than glad to have a new four-legged companion.

The human society was considering the option of euthanizing him because there wasn’t anything they could do for the poor senior dog. Before 78-year-old Frederick G. Steilen died, he made sure his West Lawn, Pennsylvania neighbor would take care of his dog if anything happened.  She has kept her word, but because her small dogs don’t get along with him, Spikey is in need of a new home.

Tammy Katzin met Steilen a couple of years ago when she was working in Sinking Spring, the town where he lived.  She would see him walking his pit bull mix every day, and the two struck up a friendship.

“The two were always together,” she told the Reading Eagle. “He was a remarkable man. Anyone who walked on Penn Avenue in Sinking Spring was familiar with Fred and Spikey.

“I really liked him.  He was so friendly. He changed me for the better. He was very positive. He planted a beautiful flower bed outside of his apartment.”

They worked out a system where Steilen would leave his window shade open so Katzin would know if he was ill.

“He told me that if anything happened to him, he wanted me to care for the dog,” she said. “I went by his house and saw his shade was open on Jan 7.”

When she looked inside, Katzin could see that Steilen was dead.  Six-year-old Spikey was by his side.

“I kept my promise that Spikey would be cared for if anything ever happened to my friend,” she said.

She brought him to be groomed at Tails A’ Waggin, who have been bathing Spikey and clipping his claws for free.

“I want to help as much as I can,” said owner Cindy Smith. “He is a sweet dog.”

Unfortunately, Spikey needs more help than either woman can provide. Though Katzin and her husband Scott, who likes taking Spikey with him on tow jobs, would love to keep him, their two Shih Tzus do not like their new brother. The orphan dog has had to be kept in a separate room from them, and the Katzins know there has to be a better home out there for him.
