One of the major causes of this problem is the runaway animal birth rate. Unfortunately, no one is ready to work on the source of the problem but instead, there are pressures from every side to focus on the symptoms.

Until we stand up to tackle the root cause of this menace, we cannot successfully end the cycle of animal death, homelessness and births. Just like bailing out a sinking ship with a teaspoon the task of finding forever homes for needy cats and dogs is gratifying. Except the hole in the bottom is properly fixed, the boat will still sink.

In a bid to reduce the number of homeless animals in shelters, many animal groups have been running programs and spearheading campaigns aimed at easing the burden on most local sheltering groups. The increasingly growing number of homeless animals can be significantly reduced once these groups stand up to their feet to provide families with superior educational and training opportunities.

Adoption is simply the best way to reduce the number of homeless animals. Most people find it difficult to adopt from shelters and rescues even when these lovable pets are offered up for free. And this is mainly because most of these shelters are not well organized. They are mostly overcrowded which often encourages the spread of sicknesses and diseases among these animals.

Psychologically, animals can begin to feel withdrawn, anxious,, depressed and aggressive after spending as little as two weeks in a traditional shelter. Unfortunately, this is where many of them spend months or years in cages. And even when some of them are finally been adopted, they are often been returned due to one behavioral issue or the other. This alone has even made them less adoptable.

Recently, a pet store did something unimaginable. One day, it just took out all its animals and replaced them with rescues. Knowing fully well that people prefer going to pet stores to buy adoptable pets, it decided to take a day out to carry out the replacement without anyone knowing. Customers were thrilled when they came in and were told that they could go with any pet of their choice for free.

One mile away, however, he sought refuge, lying down at the door of an as-yet-unopened business: Pet Pros, in the city of Monroe. Zaley was met at 5:30 am by Breanna Findley, who was headed to work at another business in the shopping center.

“From 522 a mile away, from all of the stores, to come to a pet store,” Findley told Washington NBC affiliate KING5. “I was amazed and shocked. He was a smart boy. He came to a smart place.”

Not long after, Findley’s coworker Amber McGar showed up. McGar, a dog owner, had some treats in her car’s glove compartment.

“He started warming up after we brought the cookies,” McGar told the reporter. “I couldn’t imagine how scared he was. That had to be traumatizing.”

Through the Lost Dogs of Snohomish County Facebook group and Zaley’s tag, Findley and McGar were able to find his owner.

“She told me she honestly thought she was never going to see him again,” Findley said.

Zaley got a police-car escort and was reunited with his family. On Monday, she told KING 5 she was having him checked out to make sure he’s okay.

“There’s nothing better than to have your dog back after it was missing,” said Findley.

True, indeed.

Pet owners are usually pretty obsessed with their animals. I say this as a self-proclaimed ‘crazy dog lady’ who often spends more on her beloved fur baby than she does on herself. When this tiny pup saw his owner suddenly pass out in the middle of a busy street in Guizhou, China, he became instantly anxious and refused to leave the ailing man’s side. Despite his small stature, the fierce fella wouldn’t budge even when emergency crews arrived. Once they managed to carry the man into an ambulance, the pup nervously paced in circles, clearly upset to be separated from the man.

It’s a good thing they let him hop on in with his owner, or else they’d have one very angry pup on their hands. The loyalty of our pets can be a truly powerful thing.

Watch as Coco-chan’s human feeds the well-behaved pup corn right off the cob. The way she eats it reminds me of how cartoon characters eat. I think I could even hear a little typewriter noise every time she finishes a row!

Coco-chan might be the most well-behaved dog I’ve ever seen. I bet her well-balanced diet has something to do with it, too. After all, she’s one totally adorable corn dog!

Then again, the 25th snowfall isn’t pretty anymore, icicles falling on your head are anything but fun, and suddenly, it’s -10° and you can’t feel your face.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could avoid all of that by having a helpful companion to get out in the cold and shovel us out?

Bless her little heart. She’s got enough fur to keep her nice and toasty, while we look on in awe. Now if only she could go to work for us so we can just sit on the couch with some hot cocoa.

When Linda Quinn, from Coxheath, Nova Scotia, Canada, went out to walk her dogs on November 30, 2014, the last thing she thought was that she would be saving a senior dog from drowning in a river. Not only did she save the pet, she also helped reunite the dog with the worried owners.

Quinn took her two dogs for a walk near the Sydney River in Coxheath. She heard dog cries and followed the sound, and found a dog trapped by rocks and concrete at the foot of a train trestle. What worried the woman was the river’s rising tide, and if she didn’t act quickly the dog would drown.

The woman rushed back home to drop off her own dogs and came back with Carmen Dunn, a friend. Both woman worked quickly to move the rocks away from the dog and tried to get the pet to safe ground, but when they realized they wouldn’t be able to reach safe ground with the dog, the women called authorities.

The Coxheath Volunteer Fire Department was nearby and soon after the call was made, they arrived at the scene to rescue the dog. The Cape Breton SPCA also arrived and it was thanks to their officer Nancy Lynk, that the rescued dog was reunited with the rightful owner.

Officer Lynk recognized the distinctive pink collar the dog was wearing from a Lost Dog reports Karin Shute-Sellhorn made about her missing 14-year-old dog named Duchess.

After the dog was pulled out of the water, authorities contacted Shute-Sellhorn and an emotional reunion took place.

Duchess had been missing for a week. Her owner said the dog had been taking medication for an ear infection, which made her disoriented prior to getting lost. Shute-Sellhorn took her pet home and scheduled a vet appointment to make sure her best-friend was in perfect health.

The pet owner was thankful that caring individuals like Quinn and Dunn went out of their way to help a dog in need, her dog.
